Any properly operating compressor will be hot to the touch, that is the way they evaporate water taken from defrosting. On fridge compressors there are two windings, 'run' and 'start'. the start winding will give it the initial boost and the run winding will keep it running for as long as it needs to. If the start winding gives out the fridge will do what you're describing because it's only using the run. you will need an appliance repair tech to fix it. On the other hand, refrigerators also need clean coils and air flow to operate correctly. Try removing any bags, boxes of cereal, brooms, etc. out from on top and around the fridge. Second check your coils, they are either on the back or underneath (behind the snap-in kick plate) and either vacuum them if you can, or use a product alled 'blast-a-coil' or other similar coil cleaning agent to clean them. That should work for you, if not, post again, we'll work on it!

Sounds like the start relay on the compressor is bad. take the model number and make to the parts hopuse and have them get you the start relay for your refrigerator. the relay is on the compressor underneith the black cover on the side of the compressor. shut off power and take a screw driver and remove the clip that holds the cover on and you will see the relay. good luck and thanmks for using FixYa

Tips for a great answer:

I just ran into this problem this year. Is it very warm underneath your fridge? If you remove the cover in the back, you may find that you compressor is so hot you can't touch it. You can first try blowing out your cooling fins in the back of your fridge. A fan is connected to it and it should be next to the compressor. For my case that did not work. I then replaced the fan for the cooling fins and now my fridge works fine.
