Any properly operating compressor will be hot to the touch, that is the way they evaporate water taken from defrosting. On fridge compressors there are two windings, 'run' and 'start'. the start winding will give it the initial boost and the run winding will keep it running for as long as it needs to. If the start winding gives out the fridge will do what you're describing because it's only using the run. you will need an appliance repair tech to fix it. On the other hand, refrigerators also need clean coils and air flow to operate correctly. Try removing any bags, boxes of cereal, brooms, etc. out from on top and around the fridge. Second check your coils, they are either on the back or underneath (behind the snap-in kick plate) and either vacuum them if you can, or use a product alled 'blast-a-coil' or other similar coil cleaning agent to clean them. That should work for you, if not, post again, we'll work on it!

What do you mean 'locked up'?

  • Super Myke Jan 29, 2009

thorn6 is close with his post. It's not called a 'start relay' but just a relay. The other part you'll find right under it is called the overload. you don't need any kind of equipment or tools to find which one is bad, you just shake them. If you hear a rattle, it's bad, because there is a metallic ceramic disc that creates electrical continuity. If there is an electrical overload, this part will fry and fracture, not your compressor.

Sounds like the start relay on the compressor is bad. take the model number and make to the parts hopuse and have them get you the start relay for your refrigerator. the relay is on the compressor underneith the black cover on the side of the compressor. shut off power and take a screw driver and remove the clip that holds the cover on and you will see the relay. good luck and thanmks for using FixYa

My amana abl1922fes has quit cooling several times in the 5 years i've had it. We unplug it, let it set overnight and plug it back in and it cools fine for a few months when it quits cooling again. Can...

when it stops cooling, you will see some ice build up in the freezer. Letting it sit unplugged melts the ice and you will see some water under the fridge. Connect power and it works. Cause: don't overload the fridge and the freezer. Make sure the doors close snugly. Clean all lint build ups by vacuuming under and behind the fridge after switching off power.

The refrigerator side is cool, but not cold. The freezer side is frozen, but melting. The ice in the ice maker melted, but created one big ice cycle that has not melted. The fan underneath is running,...

I just ran into this problem this year. Is it very warm underneath your fridge? If you remove the cover in the back, you may find that you compressor is so hot you can't touch it. You can first try blowing out your cooling fins in the back of your fridge. A fan is connected to it and it should be next to the compressor. For my case that did not work. I then replaced the fan for the cooling fins and now my fridge works fine.

Freezer not freezing and fridge not cooling

Check the back wall of the freezer for ice buildup.
If yes, a defrost parts problem.
Check the freezer fan. Is it running?
If no, replace the freezer fan.
Check the condenser fan at the compressor. Is it running?
If no, is compressor hot?
If compressor is hot replace condenser fan motor.
If compressor is not hot.
Replace the compressor start relay.

Fridghefreezer not working

Make sur compressor is running.

Unplug for 20-25 min., plug it back in and listen for compressor to start. You will need to be behind the Ref so you can tell if you hear the compressor or the condenser fan running.

Ice/frost build up in freezer.
This is a failure of the defrost system. Evaporator fan, heater, timer, one or more could be bad.

Check the coolant pressure, you could have a leak. Sounds like everything else is working.

Amana SxS fridge not cooling or freezing

You have a sealed system problem. There is either a small leak or a restriction somewhere in the tubing. This isn't something you could've caused so don't worry about that. Unfortunately this isn't something you can fix yourself either. You require a certified refrigeration technician to fix this problem.
