After you attach a keyboard, a mouse or another USB-based input device to your computer, your computer may no longer shut down correctly. For example, your computer may stop responding (hang) after you click Turn off or Restart.
To work around this issue, disable power management of the USB hub.

To disable power management on the USB hub:

  1. Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
  2. Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers to expand it, right-click USB Root Hub, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Power Management tab.
  4. Click to clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box, and then click OK.

On start, I get a "No bootable device--insert boot disk and press any key" message

This means that the Boot sequence part of Windows has becoming corrupted. If the FIXBOOT boot command does not work for you during the repair option, when inserting your system discs, then you have no alternative than to reinstall Windows.

If there is data on the drive that you need, then I would advise getting a USB to hard drive adapter and transfering the files to another PC before reformating.

This fault usually occurs during incorrect shutdowns,, hard resets, or power loss whilst the computer is switched on.

Start up problem with HP laptop.

Try to read this link:

Try the "Recovering from the recovery disks" section but it only works if you have a special partition that cannot be re-format/re-partitioned inside called "EISA partition". all your data will be gone though.

Reformating Laptop

Pierre jas:
What diffiulty you are facing in reformatting? You should just put the CD (the original OS CD which came with the laptop and restart the laptop). If you do not have the CD you an just simply put in any operating system CD in and restart the laptop and follow the steps. Make sure when it ask you to perform a quick formatting just select NTFS formatting. Note: I would suggest to back up all your important documents before you do that as everting will be gone once you reformat your hard drive. If your machine is shutting down before it let you save anything, on the command prompt simply put the command 'shutdown -a ' quickly save your work to an external hard drive and after that you can reinstall your OS(operating system).
Hope that helped!
