Right click on the .doc file you are trying to open, click properties, in the properties window that pops up, you will see "Opens with: ", and a change button, click the change button, and then find and select word, then click ok

How to change an adobe reader program to microsoft word?

I am assuming you want the .pdf extension to automatically open with word instead.

To change which program starts when you double-click a file, follow these steps:
  1. Open Windows Explorer by right-clicking the Start button, and then click Explore.
  2. Click a folder that contains a file of the type that you want Windows to open in a program that you select.
  3. Right-click the file and, depending on the programs installed on your computer, complete one of the following steps:
    • Click Open With to choose the program that you want.
    • Point to Open With, and then click Choose Program to choose the program that you want.
  4. The Open With dialog box is displayed. Use one of the following methods to select the program that you want to use for this file type:
    • In the Programs list, click the program that you want to use.
    • Click Browse, locate and then click the program that you want to use, and then click Open.
    • Click Look for the appropriate program on the Web to browse the Internet for the program that you want to use.
  5. Click to select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box if it is not selected.
  6. Click OK.

Note From now on, Windows XP will open all files that have this file name extension in the program that you selected. To change this, you must follow these steps again and associate a different program with this file name extension.

No longer able to access saved Excel files after installing Mountain Lion on my Mac!

These ares more of a work around, but you can get a top notch open source free word processor at OpenOffice.org. Fully compatible with Microsoft.

Or, if you have a MS SkyDrive account. It will open MS Office docs that are uploads and stored there. This the new MS office will be intergrated. Clo

Good day everyone :) I had a problem regarding MICROSOFT OFFICE.., We buy a new computer and then we asked the technician of that computer shop to install the applications on that pc. When we got home, we...

You can not legally install MS Office for free. I suggest free alternative LibreOffice. It is Office suit from OpenOffice Sun's code. After Oracle buy Sun (JAVA...) develop of OpenOffice was not so fast, and LibreOffice was born. All linux distribution will have LibreOffice like default office program. Its files are just zip files with XML code inside (every new browser can show some part of it). It is half size of doc or xls files. If something go wrong, you can always rename to zip, and go into file with lot of zip reader (doc and xls are encrypted). You has possibility for saving in Microsoft format (doc, xls). Microsoft try to copy this XML file system coding, and create new format docx, xlsx... It is not hard to try, and it is free. And every new version will be free.

Why do my database files open up in notepad whenever I click it, is this normal? help please...

You have notepad set as your default text reader. If you have Word installed use that as your default. So go in set up your default programs you can do this by going to setup default programs in the start menu when you get there look for your default programs for .doc files etc and set it to open up using Word or whatever Word program you have other than notepad. It will not harm your computer if you open .doc or .txt files using notepad.

If you want a free Word Document for Office files or for writing purposes go to Open Office it is a free word processor Click Here, that does not cost anything and will even open most Microsoft Office documents as well. Thanks for using FixYa! John

I saved an .odt file from another computer and i can't open it in a 2003 microsoft word. what should i do to open the file?

Hi .odt files will not be opened by MS word as a default. Most likely MS Word does not have the latest service pack. For Windows 2003, download Office 2003 SP2 as a minimum (available from Microsoft)
Download, Install and reboot computer if required.
When PC starts, start up MS Word 2003 which will have SP2 installed.
Locate the ODT file and then double click it. As SP2 for Office 2003 is installed (or MS Word 2003) The file will now open. The formatting might be a little off, but for the most part, all the text will be there and you'll be able to edit and make changes as you see fit.

When i receive Microsoft files with suffixes like .docx, .xlsx, .pptx am unable to open such documents in my laptop. What should i do / download to open these files. For your information i have Windows 7

MS Office 2003 and earlier will not read the old Doc extension files natively.

There are two possible solutions:

1. Upgrade your Microsoft Office to either the 2007 or the 2010 version.

2. Go to the MS web site and download a little program that will extend your MS Office to handle the new file extensions. See the link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

I have Microsoft Home and Student 2007 on my laptop. I cannot get a product key # for it? Have tried what was advised, but still nothing? Can u help?

If your are not very particular in using MS office there is a very easy answer. Forget this MS office thing. Download openoffice.org. Click the link below

http://www.openoffice.org

It is absoultely free. And works way better than MS office in my opinion. Honestly,( MS will have to pay me to use it. Not the other way around.) However, it saves a doucment in .odt format instead of your regular .doc format. But there is no need for worry. If you need to send a file to anyone who can only read a .doc file open office provides you the option to save it in .doc format. Which solves the problem if any. Try it once an you may never think of MS office ever. Open office also gives you the option of saving a document directly into PDF format. So any one who recieves it cannot edit it, if you want uneditable documents to be sent to somebody. With MS office you need to buy a new software to achieve this. More money wasted.
Like wise XL/ presentations/database type documents are saved in the open document formats, but open office gives you the option to save all of these in the MS office default formats. Good luck and have fun.
