I have seen these symptoms before when the hard disk drive has failed. It will hand on the POST screen (The part with the DELL logo) for slightly longer than usual due to fault with the drive, after that it will attempt to boot and error from the hard disk so quickly you see nothing but the laptop appear to cut out. Although the hard disk is the most likely thing to be at fault these issues could potentially be caused by any one of the parts within you laptop being broken.

If you are fairly tech savvy try downloading this utility "Seatools" http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/ burn it to a bootable CD. Put the bootable CD in you DELL laptop and boot off it, by pressing F12 and selecting to boot from CD/DVD drive. Then run a "Long test" once this test is complete the software will advise you whether the hard disk is faulty or not.

If you are not confident in trying this I would recommend taking the laptop to be diagnosed by your local computer repair business.

You should only have to press F2 (to enter BIOS) or F12 ONCE if you press it at the right time. Wait for the DELL splash screen to appear and then press either one. Don't press it too many times as often on DELL systems and others this will be registered as keyboard fault and the system will ignore all subsequent key presses.

It won't attempt to boot from your Win 7 DVD until you have managed to enter the BIOS or boot menu and request that the system boot from your ROM drive. So we need to overcome the problem of not being able to enter the BIOS (F2) or boot menu (F12) first. Follow the instructions in my previous post and see how you get on.

From what you have described you should be pressing F2 or F12 before it cuts out. On the DELL splash/loading screen as soon as it starts. If you are definitely pressing F2 or F12 before it cuts then I would look at other issues such as your RAM being faulty. A good way to check this (if you have 2 sticks in the laptop) is to remove one and check how the laptop performs. If, after removing one or the other the laptop functions correctly then you know it will have been the RAM at fault and the stick you have removed will need replacing. I would also check your keyboard isn't at fault buy connecting a USB keyboard. If the USB keyboard allows you to input F2 or F12 then you know there is a problem with the laptops fitted keyboard.

If you cannot test your RAM this way because you only have one stick or don't feel confident in removing such components then I would recommend using a bootable memory checker such as MEMTESTx86. However, if you are struggling to get the laptop to boot from CD then you'll be a bit stuck. If that's the case I recommend taking the laptop to you local repair shop to be diagnosed by a professional.

SOURCE: i turn on my computer

Hi. Try these simple steps: Restart your computer and press F8 when you see the Dell Screen. In the advanced Windows Option, choose Last Know-Good Configuration and press Enter. If nothing happens and you didn't boot to windows, you may need to reset the system back to factory image.

To do that, Do the first 2 steps if you're using Vista. If you're using Windows XP, on the Dell logo, Press Ctrl+F11 to boot from the recovery partition. Follow the instructions to recover system back to factory image.

Hope it helps!

You probably have a mbr virus. Try this:

Download The following iso listed below. It is the latest version of the Kaspersky rescue disk. You need to burn it to a CD with a program like Imgburn (Which is also FREE like the iso file). Then you need to boot from the CD and run the scanner. It should fix you right up.

Use your installation CD for Windows that came with your computer, and boot to the CD. (Usually, pressing the F12 key will offer your boot options such as "Boot to CD.")

Once booted on to the CD, it will offer you several options - Do not reinstall Windows - you want to choose the Repair Option.

When the repair stuff has loaded (You may have to select which volume you wish to work on, if so just pick the number that is next to your C drive.) and you are at the prompt that looks like "C:>" you will want to type in the following, without the quotation marks.

"chkdsk c: /r"

It will take a while for it to work all its magic, but that should fix your problem!

When it is finished, you can simply push the power button on your computer to turn it off.
When you next turn it on, it should be happier
