Yes, you should get one. This cover is typically made from vinyl and is a good surface for drafting. It protects the table surface from tool damage and from pen marks. Don't forgot to clean the cover so old pen marks will not smudge new drawings.

What brand of drafting table should I buy? What is the best type?

Alvin tables are a great starter with simple, inexpensive tables. Hann has fancier tables with lots of features. Mayline tables will last forever, while SMI and Safco make solid tables. For more information look here: http://www.squidoo.com/best-brands-of-drafting-tables

Should I buy an Alvin drafting table?

These tables are great because they are inexpensive and light. I chose this company because you can move the top board to different positions. However, I am an amateur artist so if you are a professional, maybe you should invest in a higher end table. These tables are built well but are smaller than others and come with less special features. This is great for me because I don't want any features. Also my apartment is really small so I got a great folding up one.

Can I use a regular table instead of a drafting table for painting?

the only problem with a regular table is that it's horizontal. Looking at your work like this can distort the images. A regular table is fine if you purchase a small drawing board to raise the images. The other problem with a regular table is that it can really hurt your back from all the bending over.

As a student, should I buy a drafting table?

I would say hold off. Drafting tables are not so common anymore. People who used to use them now use computer programs. Also, they are expensive for a student. However, you definitely need a table to work at. Most people find it easier to work with a slightly slanted surface so you may want a small drawing board as well.

How do I clean my drafting table cover?

You can use any cleaner to get rid of the marks on the cover. I use whatever spray bottle of cleaning fluid I have around the house. Make sure to clean regularly or your papers will get smudged from the pen marks

How can I tell if an old table I inherited is a writing table or a drafting table?

These two tables usually look very similar. If the drafting table was at a flat setting with the height set at regular desk height (maybe 74 cm) then it looks just like a writing table. The way to tell if it's a drafting table is if there is an edge on one of the sides. The edge was used to stop things from sliding off the table when the table was at an angle and it would sometimes hold writing tools.
