Question about Dell PD01S (PD01S) External Floppy Drive

Open Question

Can I use this PD01S as an external optical drive with my HPPavillion laptop?

Ok, so my cd/dvd on board optical drive has been failing, So I picked up an extra PD01S from a friend who happen to have a couple extra. The power source connection adapter on the end however seems to be a Dell proprietary usb/? stack connector. It looks square with a usb stacked on top of another funky ? Anyway Can I somehow utilize this disk drive as an external optical drive for my HP Pavillion laptop?

If you have a complete External Media Bay drive (drive, case, cable), then you can plug the connector to the laptop or docking station, and turn the laptop on. The laptop will detect it automatically.

Cant open cdrom

I'm pretty sure that model of laptop doesn't have a CD-ROM, or any optical media drive, could be your problem.

If you have an external one connected, there should be a button on the external device, alternatively open "My Computer" and right click on the optical drive and select "Eject" to eject the tray.

Hope this helps.

Is there an adaptor available in order to use a Dell PD01S with a standard USB? I have an IBM laptop I want to use this with...

Your best bet will be to get a "USB 2.0 CardBus Adapter". This will give you an extra USB port to use. It is a bad idea to go from 2 USBs to 1 in this instance. Below I provided a link to ebay for some options

Drive has changed from D to G and will not record

Removable devices that act as readers, storage, or burners normally are given random letters starting with the lowest letter available. It sounds like your computer is not recognizing the drive.

Solution:

Go to Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management. From this point, Id like you to find your Drive. Should be under the "Other Devices" area, "Disk Drives", or "Floppy Disk Drives". Once found, please right click and go to Properties. I want you to "Uninstall" the driver for your floppy. After this, delete anything that came with the software(Not your personals, of course). Finally, reinstall your drivers for the drive and see if that helped. please message me if it does not.

Hi i want to instoal software but i have laptop windows vista so how to instoal

It depends on the laptop and the software. If the laptop does not have an optical drive, either download the software (many companies will let you buy the software as a download with an extra fee for either a CD/DVD sent in addition or an "download again if needed") or get an external optical drive (USB). Some of these drives use an external power brick; others are powered by USB and take 2 USB ports. The prices for the USB powered optical drives is ~$50.

If you downloaded the software, unzip the file(s) if needed then right click on the installer and select Run As Administrator. (With some software, do not let the program run when the install is finished. It can get locked to always launch the UAC to check if you are the administator.) With the external optical drive, you would install the software as you do with an internal optical drive (either auto-run or manually access the drive and find the executable file).

I hope this helps.

My laptop doesn't detect the external hard drive

Hi there
hey if you are not getting it to recognizing the drive on system startup use your set up disk if you have it if not go to device manager and scan for hardware change and see if it can be found there if not try going into the bios and ensure that the usb ports are enabled and that the plug and play is enabled also you also need to ensure that the device is compatable with your pc i would check with the manufacture of the computer best regards mike
