Re: Copying data to smartdisk

But is empty? Reformat to 32bit[makes it then universal reading for all systems as opposed to NTFS which makes it readable XP/2000 only.

My Kingston DataTraveler G3 8GB USB 2.0 USB Flash Drive (White/Yellow)'s data all got corrupted, and i a cannot do anything [copying, pasting, renaming, moving, etc.] with the corrupted files/data

Get data back is a file recovery program for flash drives, it may work for this, but if the files are corrupt you would then be recovering corrupt files.

I've a Samsung G2 Portable HX-MU050DC/GW 500GB. - I was using it fine on PC1 when a Scan Disk Message Window (bad sector) popped out. I did a scan disk, nothing happened and continue copying and pasting...

when you see "bad sector" you need to not only run scandisk, you need to tell it to "automatically repair bad sectors" if you didn't do this, then you have written to the bad sectors and that data can not be retrieved. As for the MAC issue, you didin't say what format your HDD was, if it was FAT32 it should mount on MAC, but not if it is NTSC as MAC can't read it. If I were you I would copy all the files from your HDD to a wiindows machine and then run scandisk again, only this time make sure to auto repair, these sectors will now be gone, and its not a great loss and does happen quite ofter unfortunately. The data you have written to the bad sectors "CAN NOT" be recovered, you might get part of it, but most likely not. Good Luck

It depends on how you copied your files to the SmartDisk.
If you used the "normal" method of copying files/folders in Windows, then just connect it to the new computer.
If you used some "backup" software from Verbatim to write "backup" files,
then you'll need to install that software on the new computer,
in order to retrieve from those "backup" images.

try to format your hard drive, then try again.

if you still cannot do it, do a low level format, using this tool:

if you still cannotdo it, it may be a harware problem. try to copy a big .mkv file like that from another pc, to be sure it isn't your pc's fault, if you can do it, then it's your pc, if you still cannot it's the disk.

in the firs case the troublesooting is quite difficoult but if you post your system configuration i may help.

in the second case if allso a low level format fails, then i don' think we can do something for youo... you should get assistance from the manufacturer....
hope this help,

Have a 500gb seagate go and can't copy files from drive

Is it possible that the files are of copyrighted material? If so, they may have a "bomb" within them to prevent copying between certain devices. The bomb would prevent a second level of copying.

How many directory deep is the file going that you are trying to save? I believe the maximum NTFS file (location + name) of file length can not exceed 256 characters total.

Example: C:\user\documents\file.exe is OK

But: C:\user\documents\folder\folder\folder\folder\folder\this folder name 230 charicters long\file.exe BAD

I had the same problem but it felt like the drive was working. I took a chance, inserterd a 4GB CF card, and pressed the copy button. I hoped it would shut off after the copy was made due to the 30 second inactiviy timeout. After about 10 minutes, the blue backlight to turned off and it powered down. I plugged the Photobank into a laptop via USB cable and checked the original CF card files against the Photobank files. Success! All files were copied!

You will receive an error message when copying a file larger than 4GB to the hard drive if the drive is formatted FAT32. The FAT32 file system has a file size limitation of 4GB. You may also receive an error when backing up to the hard drive using backup software. To correct this problem you will need to format the drive to NTFS. If you are using Windows ME or 98SE, you will not be able to use NTFS.
There are some products that do not support the NTFS files system or changing their file system. If you own a FlashTrax/FlashTrax XT/FotoChute/PhotoBank/USB FireLite XPress, you cannot change the format of the drive to NTFS. It must be kept as FAT32 in order to operate properly. If you are using SOHO NAS via ethernet, do not format it to NTFS. If you have any questions, please contact technical support before you format the drive.

Warning: Formatting a hard drive erases all data from the drive. Please backup any data prior to formatting the hard drive.
To format to NTFS, open My Computer.
1.Right-click on the Verbatim hard drive, left-click on Format.
2.Select NTFS as the File System.
3.Place a check in Quick Format.
4.Click Start.
Once the format completes, you will be able to copy files larger than 4GB to the hard drive.

If you don't mind loosing any data on the drive, go to the control panel, and select [Performance and Maintenance] then go to administrative tools, locate the option that says [Computer Management] in the window that pops up, look for the tab that says Disk Management. In the window, find the drive, select it, and hit delete. select yes on the window that pos up. Now right click on the drive which should now have a sub-header that says "Unpartitioned Space" and select format. Leave all of the Default option in the wizard that comes up, and see if this fixes the problem.
