Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Entry of the code requires that you see whether you should press the left or the right of the Control knob to select the digits once in Security Code Mode. With this in mind, then priority would be re-establishing/repairing the display of the Kenwood DPX501U. To effect this, the unit must then be removed again, opened and voltages supplying the display module checked.

good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

My stereo says" protect" everytime i turn it on. can't get anything else.

Hello grammagrisbo, hi your Kenwood head units will show "protect" when there's a problem with the speaker outputs so check to see if the impedance load meets your radio, 8ohms or 4 ohms?. having parallel two speakers on a single channel may cause this dilemma. This might also mean a shorted speaker wire, a blown speaker, or an internal defect in the head unit. Once the condition that's causing the "protect" mode is fixed, the CD player should be back to normal, the next time you turn it on.
If it's staying in "protect", then you'll definitely have to remove the stereo and do something to fix it. Many car audio stores will do system troubleshooting, for a fee. If you want to do it yourself, here's what you need to do:

Pull the Kenwood unit from the dash and disconnect all the speaker wires. power it on and see if the "protect" message displays. If it does, the stereo has an internal defect and will need to be serviced. If it doesn't, then turn it off, and re-connect one speaker only. Turn it on again and see if it will displays "protect" message.

If the radio works with one speaker connected, connect the other speaker to the second channel, you may have now the idea where the problem begun, you will identify the speaker that's causing the problem. There may be a wiring problem or defective speaker in that channel.

If it displays "protect" with a single speaker connected, then disconnect that one and try the other one. If all the speakers cause a "protect" mode, then you're probably back to a defective head unit.

Kenwood KVT-847DVD radom reset problem

I solved this by changing where the power for the DSP unit was coming from the manual specifys to connect them to the same +12 connector for display and DSP and it worked fine in the Series 1 however for some reason in the series 2 the DSP unit draws too much power from the headunit +12 power connector and as soon as the unit fires bass in a song etc it drags it down to the point of the display shutting off, I change the +12 on the DSP unit to my 4GA +12 power cable through an adaptor block and it has worked fine since.

I need to know where the Validation code is in my kenwood 7100 unit. I am trying to get the unlock code for the map update on my SD card

The "validation code" is displayed on the unit when you first place the update SD card (or DISC) in the kenwood unit.

When I connect my 8GB Sony walkman to the KCD-W5541U head unit the display shows "Reading" (flashing on/off). Waited for around 10 minutes and still says "Reading". Phoned a friend who...

It may be the format of your walkman is not compatible with your head unit. try turning your walkman off when you connect it, some units will only read when it has uninterrupted access to your walkman's memory
good luck
