Question about Dell Dimension 8400 power supply ** FREE ** (D8400SATA300W24PINB) Power Supply

Dell Dimension 8400 power supply

My Dell Dimension 8400 stopped powering up last year and was giving a blinking amber light. It stayed like this for about a month and then powered up one day!! It was fine all last year except for once when it did the same thing then powered up after one day. Last week, it did the same thing and is not powering up!! What is up? The problem seems so random.

p.s. I bought it from the states but I am using it overseas where the power is 240 not 110. Also, its power supply was damaged before due to a misconnection and was replaced by the original Dell Dimension 8400 power supply from Dell.

Any idea what is going on? Is this a common problem with the power supply of this model?

Hi,
It not a common problem. The problem that you are facing is is beacuse of faulty motherboard. The blinking amber is caused , becasue the motherboard is not able to distribute the power signal to the devices . You can follow the link below to trouleshoot the problem if you are comfortable in opening the computer chassis

Dell dimension 8400 blinking amber light ethernet port

An Amber blinking power button indicates a low voltage problem. This can be caused by a defective power supply or a defective motherboard. Since you replaced the power supply, my guess is that the motherboard has a problem.
Just to make sure that nothing else is causing the problem, remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc... Remove the memory modules and disconnect cables to CD/DVD drives. Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged.

Your power supply or motherboard has a problem. You can try getting a power supply on the internet ( $25 to $75) first. If no go then motherboard (about $100 to $200 ). The 8400 is about 6 years old which is the average lifespan of computers. One last thing you can try is removing the heatsink assembly and re-seating the processor. You have to clean the old thermal compound from the CPU chip and heat sink and reapply the compound (thermal paste). You might be better off buying a new computer from Walmart.

My 6 year old Dell Dimension 8400 quit working completely.

Depending on the symptoms, you may have different faults.
http://www.fixya.com/support/r4282412-find_no_post_diagnostic_information_dell
Flashing Amber power LED, normally power supply
AAGG Diag LEDs normally bad RAM
Solid Amber Power LED, bad motherboard or Expansion card connected to it.
If you need a motherboard a Precision Workstation 370 motherboard is essentially the same and is available, (8400 motherboards are scarce)

The POWER and DIAG LEDs can give you information. If no DIAG LED look at the POWER LED

Flashing amber, most likely the power supply
Solid Amber, motherboard or item plugged into the motherboard (Expansion card, external connection etc.)

Dell Dimension power problem

There are several different solutions for this as posted at this Forum.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/51352-2-dell-dimension-8400-wont-boot

1) A lot of people have just removed the Jumper for the CMOS and turned the Power back on and back off and replaced the jumper and/or removed the battery.

2) Several people have reseated the Memory and after booting back up it worked.

3) A few had to replace the Mother Board and CPU but in this instance they had to also replace the Case because the Dell case wasn't really fit for the heat of from the CPU.

4) I had the exact same problem and luckily replacing the Power Supply fixed this for me. I had to cut out the back of the Dell case for the toggle on/off switch but when I tested the old Power Supply it was only getting 5amps and this was causing the Amber/Orange/Yellow light to constantly flash.

I hope this helps!

Have a yellow amber light blinking

A Blinking Amber or Yellow power button means that the power supply is receiving power from the source but is unable to properly distribute it to the components. This can be caused by a defective power supply or a defective motherboard. Just to make sure that nothing else is causing the problem, remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc... Remove the memory modules and disconnect cables to CD/DVD drives. Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged.

Computer Won't Power Up

If the blinking amber LED is on the computer itself and not the monitor, this is most likely a power supply issue. First thing to try would be replace the power supply. If the blinking led is on the monitor, it probably has bad capacitors and needs to be replaced. (or repaired)
