Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Hi, I have an LG refrigerator that has stopped cooling altogether.

Trying to figure out what's wrong, I removed the back panel and listened to it running. The fan runs but what I noticed is there is a click noise and then the compressor seems to want to start running for about 5 seconds as I can hear it buzz and then another click noise and it stops. This happens like every two minutes. I try to make out if the click sound is coming from the compressor or from the overload/relay unit but I can't tell for sure. I already ordered a new overload and relay but I'm not too sure anymore. Really hoping it's not the compressor and that'll end up costing me a new fridge. Thanks Mark

Its the ptc overload/relay,but make sure to check the compressors motor winding resistance on both start and run windings theres 3 terminal pins where the ptc overload attaches the single pin above or below the other 2 pin terminals is the common terminal, check for 8-11 ohms between the common and each of the other 2 terminals, then if no resistance or zero resistance then its the compressor, also check from the compressor case to each terminal at a time to make sure compressor isn't grounded to the case

Thanks for your answer Daniel. I don't have an amp meter so I'm not able to check the resistance. I really hope it's only the overload/relay. Already ordered the parts.

Mark, you only need an ohm meter to do the resistance test, even a cheap radio-shack ohm-meter will work in this case

Problem fixed. It was the overload/relay indeed.

SOURCE: Refrigerator buzzes & clicks

The only thing a capacitor does is 'kick' the compressor to start it. There is a box on the compressor containing the start relay. If it is defective or dirty, it might buzz. With the power off, find it, remove its cover and use some canned air to blow off any dirt inside. If that doesn't fix it, replace it. If there is a fan down there, be careful...and be sure it is working.

SOURCE: Kenmore Elite refrigerator stops cooling - Relay keeps cycling

The compressor is locked up. Basically it is stuck. You can pick up at the local appliance parts store a hard start relay, Home Depot ,Lowes, or or those guys wont have it. Its not too expensive and is worth trying because your only other option is you need to replace the compressor. The part is called a kick start or hard start, the guy at the parts store will know what you are talking about. It is simple to connect and has the wiring directions on it. Sometimes this is all it takes. I have been able to get a stuck compressor to go by placing a short 2x4 on it and whack it with a hammer a few times. This is only a temporary fix though, as it will eventually lock up again, but emergency situation this saved the food. If the fridge has a fan back there make sure it works too, it may have been the original cause. Good luck.

This usually indicates that the compressor is working too hard and drawing too much current. The click that you hear is a safety shut-off. Possible causes of this are numerous and usually require having a professional come in to fix the issue, it can range anywhere from a faulty compressor to a bad start relay.

There is in most cases a temporary fix, it is called a hard start relay/capacitor. It is usually available from an appliance parts retailer for around $15 to $20. Installation instructions are included, just be sure to unplug your refrigerator first and make sure that someone following you can repair from where you left off. This relay assembly can normally get you up and running but it should not be used as a permanent fix. This will not correct for a refrigerant leak in the system.

Check your refrigerator owners manual before making any repairs or modifications to your refrigerator, there may be an extended warranty on the sealed system and compressor.

I can help , It was the relay , they can blow when they experience a hard start , by replacing it and having the same issue this means the compressor is locked up , they sell a booster for this that can sometimes free the compressor up , its called an rco410 , this part will be your only chance to get your compressor going again. let me know if you have any other questions and tell me how it works out.
