Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Partition Problem helloI used partition magic to split a filled partition(D:) into 2 parts D: and K:. After I reboot the D: partition became a RAW partition nad says parameter is incorrect and does not opens(no properties). In Partition Magic the D: part shows up having previous data but the computer Management shows the partion without File system and completely empty. The K:partition shows in the computer management with FAT32 type but does not shows up in My computer.  when tried to merge them again using Partition Magic it requires a format of D:. Is there still Data left in D: ? How will K:show up ?

How i solved that very same prob is i have a spare drive only 2G with windows 2000 and partition magic 7.0 on it all the drives other than that are accessable with these 2 simple programs just hook them up to an old system with a OS like that and you can move that data around and also sort out the partion prob without the hassles that XP throws up, its just trying to protect itself where as 2000 is a lot braver with system changes.hope this helps

Yuou must backup the data of d:\ in another harddrive or volume before doing this backup your data in another volume and then merge the data you can even copy the sectors from partion magic .Data can be recovered by using data recovery softwares.

Missing Operating System on D: partition Bootup

Follow the steps from this site http://www.wikihow.com/Change-the-Active-Partition-of-Your-Hard-Disk-with-Parted-Magic. When you changed the active partition you told the computer to look for information from the wrong partition. Using the program from that site will allow you to make the other partition active again. You'll then be able to boot into Windows again. As far as making backup discs, I believe you hit F11 while booting to access the recovery partition. From there you can make your recovery discs. Not 100 percent sure on that though. And you will need to get the windows partition set back as active first.

C drive too full

If there is a large number of unused space on other partition you could directly allocate the free space the your system partition, but keep in mind backup your important files is recommended no matter which way you use when re-partition hard drive, learn more from this link: http://www.extend-partition.com/help/allocate-free-space.html

My hard drive has been split, how do I make it back into one?

You can delete both partitions and then create a single partition and then format the partition.
If you do not want to delete the partitions and lose your data then you can use a program called Partition Magic to resize your main partition so it is a single partition.

Raw file system

To fix the problem
Disable the S.M.A.R.T error detection feature in the CPUCool program or similar utility.
Boot to the Windows 2000 or XP installation CD, and at the Startup menu, press R for repair.
In the Recovery Console, type the following:
chkdsk /p
When the CHKDSK process has finished, reboot the computer.
Run the program again.
The error should no longer be reported unless you start using the S.M.A.R.T error detection feature again.

Error occurs with PartitionMagic 8.0
If you encounter Error 1516 with PartitionMagic 8, first run CHKDSK /F on the affected partition. For instructions on how to run CHKDSK, read How to Run Microsoft's CHKDSK from the Command Line. If this does not fix the error, try running PartitionMagic with the /IFC switch, which causes file system errors to be ignored.
To run PartitionMagic with the /IFC switch
Boot from the first PartitionMagic rescue disk.
When you are prompted to insert the second rescue disk, press Ctrl+C to drop to the command (A:>) prompt.
Insert the second PartitionMagic rescue disk and type the following:
pqmagic /ifc
Press Enter.
please go ahead and try the above steps may be it will fix it

Rules for runing partitiom magic

Thanks for the respone

I have been informed by the VISTAHEAD admin. that vista can not be partitioned by more than 4 parts.
I used the shrink function available in the Vista computer manger , rename the DVD drive label, and labeling the new partitions, then format them as NTFS, then reboot twise for taking the configuration setup and every thing is o.K. without the need for the partition magic.
Now i have only 4 patitions. But didn't know why is this limit?
Beside that i read that the partition magic v8.0 cannt partiton the vista O.S main drive.

Thanks

Partition problem

In my humble opinion, the best option is to install a second (blank or larger) drive. Install some recovery software such as "easy recovery pro" or something that will be able to read files from a filesystem that has had the partition table written over. Start with trying to scan using FAT32, and in failing that, try NTFS. Restore the data to the second drive, format the first and partition as required. Copy the data back to the first drive to the partitions that you specified, and erase the data from the second drive. A free option may be pandora recovery, available at http://www.pandorarecovery.com/features/

Partition parameter

From the data you provided, the D drive is deleted and is newly created. But it is not yet formatted. So the data is virtually deleted. Why I said virtually is because, the data is still there on the drive physically and you can recover it using third party tools like OO disk recovery tool. That is why partition magic is still showing data on it.
And it is also obvious that the task which Partition Magic started (splitting drives) is not finished properly. That is why K partition is incorrectly formatted. It is natural that it asks format of D drive because D drive belongs to no file type and it must be of FAT32 or NTFS or other file system.
The solution for your problem is try recovering your data on D drive using disk recovery tools. Then format it using FAT32 or NTFS. Format K drive also in FAT32 or NTFS. Use either partition magic or Computer Management. Since already PM caused problems on your computer, try computer management. It is safe.

RAW file system

RAW file system is typical of an unformatted hard drive and is the default state for most new retail drives because the manufacturers won't know which operating system their customers are going to put on the drive or use it in conjunction with.

Most operating system installations come with utilities to partion and and format new drives see fdisk from MSDOS (specifically versions 5 and higher) And MS Windows 3.1 through 95,98 and ME which all used the FAT32 file system as default and would partition and format during installation. Windows NT similarly would partition and format the drive during install to the NTFS system, as do all versions of Windows XP.

if you are not installing a new OS but setting the drive as a slave to a currently installed drive then you can use a program like Partition Magic or similar to detect the installed drive and partition / format it tou your requirements

Cant reboot win.98se after using partition magic 6.0 to merge adjacent partition to c. drive

how large the capacity of your hard disk drive? it is possible that would be the problem it is too dangerous that it will lead your hard disk to crash the system and damage the disk itseld that can create bad sectors on your disk. If you want to partition your hard drive, run the FDISK utility instead.
