Could not make it work in AHCI mode

My laptop hard disk supports AHCI mode but if I enable it in BIOS, the system crashes soon after the log in screen in XP. I understand that AHCI drivers are needed but do not know how and where to obtain them and install. I searched on net but found AHCI drivers for only intel boards. Mine is Acer Grosmoor board on nVidia MCP77 chipset having an AMD Turion QL-60 processor.

When you put it in AHCI mode, it just quits installing and restarts. It never asks for any drivers.

Based on my Vista installation, make sure you install the OS in AHCI mode. Then you will be asked to load the appropriate driver. You should be able to download the xp driver for nvidia chipset in the Acer driver download website (Acer). Load it before proceeding the installation. That should take care of the problem.

Hard disc not detected

I think this is not a recognizing issue ..but you should change the settings on the hard disk bus..Specially if it gives you a blue-screen error ..I think by default the hdd is running on sata ahci mode..and for this you need to load a 3rd party driver when you install the operation system ..If you reinstalled it recently .and it start doing the issues and said there is no drive present it this mode to be blamed...and you need to press f10 I think ..to get to bios ..and in there select under advanced settings the hard disk ..(or in the devices ) ..and under its settings locate the mode ..and disable the ahci and select sata like ide or ide compatible ..or ide mode..and press F10 to save the settings and restart ..In this moment if you have a operation system and its functional it will boot with no issues..
If you want to keep the ahci mode function on ..(its faster ) you need to reload teh operation system ..and insert the driver for ahci during it ..and select it from the location by browsing ..and install it as a 3rd party driver ..and will work ..It is needed for to recognize teh hard disk in the ahci mode..and run proper ..but if the mode is changed on ide compatible ..the driver is no longer needed and the system will run without it ..and the actual difference is not that visible ..unless you have a slow system with low ram memory ..and in this case you feel the difference ..

Can`t start laptop. Pri Master Hard Disk:S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad ,Backup & Replace

Hi donkeld1,

(SMART) Self Monitoring And Reporting Technology.
  1. Go to your BIOS by pressing DELETE or F2 it depends on the laptop brand but those two will definitely work.
  2. Choose Advance Tab Enter.
  3. Under IDE TAB, AHCI: Port 0 Hard disk 0 Enter.
  4. SMART by default (Enabled) Enter (Disable).

The steps above are for SATA AHCI mode, regardless of modes, procedure might be a little different our main objective is to Turn-off/ Disable SMART.

  1. If you are able to log in to your operating system with out any problems you should consider backing up your files just to be sure. SMART indicates the problem in the following Temperature, Head Flying Height, Spin-Up Time etc. You're still lucky because most of the time hard drives just die without notifying the user.
  2. If you really want to know the defect try to install Hard Disk Sentinel or other Smart Utility software. One problem that can be fixed is temperature issue but I doubt it can be fixed in your case because laptop are portable, the clearance for air circulation is to tight.
  3. If your laptop is under warranty I suggest you return it so the manufacturer will replaced the hard drive. If not I suggest you buy a new hard drive, Install an operating system and drivers.

Hopefully this information helps.

Thank you for using Fixya.

Can't find updated ACPI Bios for toshiba satellite m45 s331. If found how to install? Getting blue screen Bios in this system not fully ACPI compliant.

I already explained in the other post ..The action required is either install a 3rd party raid and ahci driver ..and if you do not have the possibility ..just c\go to bios and enable the hard disk bus to work as ide..(disable ahci mode) I'm not sure how it will appear ..but you have to look under the bus mode..where the hard disk is seen ..It will appear as ahci enabled..and need to be disabled or ..will have raid mode enabled..and need to set it as native ..or ide compatible

I have toshiba satellite L505-S5990 model.i have installed windows xp by changing the settings in Bios that is sata hard disk enabled as compatable mode from AHCI.if i change to AHCI i can't install...

If you would like to make use of the SATA controller's AHCI features, you should enable this BIOS feature. But please note that enabling this feature requires you to load the SATA controller driver during the Windows XP installation routine.
If you do not intend to use the AHCI features, it's recommended that you disable this BIOS feature. This allows you to use the native Windows XP driver. You won't need to load the SATA controller driver during the Windows XP installation routine.

Error while trying to install windows xp Stop: 0x0000007B on a dell Optiplex sx270

The most popular Blue Screen of Death error in Windows is the STOP 0x0000007B error, sometimes called the 0x7b error or the "INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE" BSOD.
This BSOD (which is actually the common name for a STOP Error) could mean that there's a serious hardware problem with a hard drive controller, a driver issue, or even a boot sector virus.
In your case though, this is most likely one of 4 capacitors that are known to blow out on any SX270. Slide the bar at the back of your PC to the remove cover side and look inside for swollen caps. Remove the fans and cpu cover as well and check around there. Replace any bad ones you can find with old caps borrowed from an old motherboard if you have one, or new ones from any decent electronics parts warehouse. This fix has worked for me on every SX270 I have ever had.

Laptop not working

I need to know what you mean by Blue screen. Do you get a blue desktop screen, or, do you get the blue screen crash window with technical information on it. I will assume you mean the blue screen crash window.
It sounds like a corrupted program bank, or you could have a faulty hard disk, or a memory stick that has gone bad, or perhaps the processor or GPU has failed. without knowing what is on this "blue screen" i can only offer suggestions.
Contact Lenovo and see if they provide diagnostics on this computer. (memory and hdd on board tests, etc). A Diagnostic would test your hardware and ram and CPU and GPU outside of the windows OS. If your ram passes the test, and your CPU passes and your hard drive passes and video/GPU passes the diagnostics, then it is not a physical/hardware issue. If you pass diags, you have a corrupt driver or BIOS setting.
Just to make sure its NOT a bios setting, enter your BIOS and check your raid/sata configuration. 99% of the planet would have this option set to "LEGACY" or to "IDE/EIDE" mode or any mode that is NOT AHCI, because AHCI would require a 3rd party windows driver.
If your hardware fails a diagnostic, you will need to replace the faulty part. If your hardware passes diagnostics, then it is a software issue. Again without knowing more abou the screen you describe, I can only assume and speculate. But, I would make sure my BIOS Sata settings are set for legacy and eide mode, as well as making sure the drives are enabled in bios.

Laptop does not boot up and recovery from cd gives d2d32 type mismatch error

A couple of things to try in the bios:

1. try changing the SATA mode to IDE for the restore and then back to AHCI mode after it was complete

2. Enable disk to disk recovery mode: To enable disk-to-disk recovery (hard disk recovery), activate the BIOS utility,
then select Main from the categories listed at the top of the screen. Find D2D
Recovery at the bottom of the screen and use the <F5> and <F6> keys to set this
value to Enabled.

Unable to install Xp on Hp Pavilion dv2000

Go to the BIOS setup, & change the disk controller setting from AHCI to IDE. might worth the try. Some Laptops don't have option of SCSI or IDE. But there are SATA Enable/Disable option. Try disabling SATA.

Windows XP boots endless if SATA is set to AHCI

this is'nt so easy here an example solution:

Enabling SATA mode to AHCI after XP Install (applicable to most laptops, or systems) If you want to enable SATA mode as AHCI after installing Windows XP, then read on. It's a bit of a long read because of step-by-step instructions, but worth it.

I did this on on Acer Aspire 5315-2153, it seems like the basic strategy should work on other laptops or systems.

For whatever reason, you may have installed Windows XP on your new laptops with SATA Native Mode disabled in the BIOS. Once XP is installed, enabling it in the BIOS will result in a BSOD upon loading Windows because XP doesn't have the correct drivers.

I read that enabling SATA native mode will give you a slight performance inrease and slightly increased battery life, so it seems worthwhile to me smile.gif

Here's how I did it on a Acer Aspire 5315-2153 running Windows XP (32 Bit version):

- Download the Intel Matrix Storage Manager software from Intel (I think it's iata_enu.exe)or AHCI_Intel_v7.5.0.1017_XP.zip from Acer web site.

- Extract files from AHCI_Intel_v7.5.0.1017_XP.zip to e.g. C:\AHCI_Intel_v7_5_0_1017_XP files need: (you may delete the rest)

iaahci.cat
iaahci.inf
iastor.cat
iastor.inf
iastor.sys
TXTSSETUP.OEM

- Now go to Device Manager, under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers you should

see: Intel 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Storage Controller

- Right-Click on that and select Update Driver
- Say no to connecting to Windows Update to search, hit Next
- Select Install fro a list or specific location (Advanced), hit Next
- Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install", hit Next
- Select Have Disk
- Browse to C:\AHCI_Intel_v7_5_0_1017_XP and highlight the iastor.inf file, hit Open
- Select OK
- Now you should have a list of controllers, for the Acer 5315-2153 choose Intel 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Storage Controller, hit Next
- You'll get warned that installing the device driver is not recommended, click Yes to continue installing
- Click Finish
- Click Yes to restart your computer

When your computer boots up, you need to hit F2 to enter the BIOS. Change SATA mode to AHCI, save changes and exit.

After you log into Windows, your computer will find the "new" hardware. Wait until you get the popup message to restart your computer, say Yes to restart one last time.

You may download also from Intel the RAID/AHCI Software - Intel® Matrix Storage Manager (iata70_enu.exe 5640KB) and install it in your system, it may fix in case you got the wrong Intel 82801 AHCI controller.

I give credit to Jamie Rybarczyk at HP Business Support Center forum for doing most of typing.

Enter BIOS Menu and look for Hard Disk SATA IDE setting of AHCI. Disable this by setting to Compatible mode.
XP does not support AHCI mode.
Please rate me if this works.
