TV Had Burning Smell and Now Won't Power On

A plastic/electronic burning smell coming from vent at top of tv filled the room so i turned off the tv. attempted to turn on the tv about 30 minutes later but it would not turn on -- no lights showing either. did attempt to unplug power cord from the wall but it did not help.

help!

my sony bravia klv40u100m was purchased in january 2007, manufactured in june 2006 (according to back of tv) and has not had any problems at all before this.

I have the same problem. No power light, burning smell and just over two years old. That's $1000/ year rental. The fixes that have been posted sound expensive and unreliable. My next LCD TV/Monitor will be the inexpensive no-name brand. It will be less painful when it fails. I will likely have to pay someone to environmentally dispose of this one.

It is a real possibility that the power board has failed.

It is fairly easy and safe to remove it and inspect it and the burnt component will be easy to find.

Make sure you place the TV on a flat surface screen down where it is well supported. Do not put anything on the table under the set if there is a chance it will come in contact with the screen. Allowing the weight of the set to rest directly on the screen presents a real risk that the screen will break. Lying flat on a table, the set will rest on the frame around the screen which should be safe.

Do not apply power to the set with the back off as there is a risk of electrocution.

The board is available as a module and can be found on eBay occasionally. The part number is 1-789-496-11 and it will cost between $250 and $300 new.

I suggest you turn the repair over to a qualified service professional for the best outcome. Attempt any repairs at your own risk of creating further damage or replacing the wrong parts. The board failed for a reason. The core cause may not be the power board.

You probably have one or more burned-out electrolytic capacitors in the power supply. Any competent electronic technician can replace them. The capacitors are usually priced between $0.40 and $2.00 at major electronic component distributers such as Digi-Key or Mouser Electronics. Make sure the replacements are selected for long life, high temperature rating and high ripple current. I use Panasonic FR1 series or United Chemi-con EKZN series capacitors for this application.

Burned-out electrolytic capacitors usually have the top of the can domed out instead of flat, and may have brown or black stuff leaking out of the vent scores. The photo below shows two typical capacitors with black plastic sleeves around the can. The one on the left is good, the one on the right is bad.

My daughter bought this tv for me a few days ago and there's a smell coming from the back of the tv is that normal?

Some plasticizer out-gassing is normal in new electronics. I personally would want to make sure there is plenty of ventilation in the room for the first couple of days, especially while the set is running. A burned plastic odor or visible smoke is cause for concern; if this happens unplug the set immediately and make a warranty claim.

The tv smells like a burning wire

Can you describe where the odor is coming from. Is it coming out from the side panels on the tv set itself, or perhaps the plug, on end of the main power wire. Check around the electrical outlet. Make sure nothing else is plugged into the same outlet. It sounds as if some of the electrical components on the circuit board are burnt or burning out. Tv may have experienced a power surge, etc. Check also if the power plug is heating up. Be careful and smell around top side vents on tv. Be sure and unplug the set before leaving it unattended if you cannot locate the source of the "burning wire smell."

You should never have an acrid or burning smell coming from electronics. I'd return the unit, if that is still an option, as it is about to fail.
