InSinkErator Badger 5hp NOISY

2 YRS old - I reset it; I used allen wrench to try to unclog a clog - nothing in there! When I run it it RATTLES as if there are loose parts clanging around in there. What could that possibly be? If I felt free to run it with all that noise, I do think it runs fine/grinds things/does not clog. Help!

Our Badger disposal starting making a noise that sounded like the blades weren't balanced or something. It grinds fine and works fine. It's only about 6 mos. old, but I would like to find out what's wrong with it before I use it anymore.

there's nothing in it. the rattle is intense and sounds like something broke loose inside it. it's definitely a metal on metal noise.

I installed mine about 2 months ago and it ran great until a couple of days ago. Now it vibrate like crazy and makes a loud noise to go along with it. Not a loose part kind of rattle sound but something is not right. I reset it and that didn't help.

I had the same problem.  I felt around and felt nothing in there like a spoon or whatever.  I shined a flashlight down in there and couldn't see anything.  I ran it again, and shined the flash light down there.  Finally, I noticed a dime in the bottom.  I couldn't feel it, couldn't see it on the first look, but as soon as I removed it, problem solved.

AMAZING! I have had the metal on metal sound for months and couldn't see anything in there. I even felt around ( power off!!!) and couldn't find anything. I was getting ready to replace it or at least take it all apart when I read your tip. THANK YOU! It took about three short bursts of running it before what was left of the the dime landed somewhere i could see it. I fished it out with tongs and problem solved!

If it were me I would remove the disposal, turn it upside down and see what comes out. Would I run it with something in it making a lot of noise? Absolutely not. If something is loose in it, it could harm the disposal.

I had the grinding sound, a shrilling noise. Then it jammed. I freed it with allen wrench and it started with the noise again. I checked with a flash light and found a small nail jammed inside. I was able to remove the nail. Everything works fine now. I also gave instructions, again, on keeping the drain catch in the drain at all times!

Garbage disposal clogged. how do i fix?

The whirring sounds like the motor is running under no load conditions. Whatever has it clogged apparently hasn't gotten down to the motor yet. I know you are trying to avoid removing it but you may have to to unclog it. Some types have a valve that is solenoid operated between the sink and the grinder motor. If yours is so equipped then it will have two wires right under where it comes out of the sink. If so then this solenoid could be malfunctioning and not letting the garbage get to the grinder. If not, I would suggest you remove it and check it to see what has it clogged. That's about all I know to tell you to try. Sounds like the unit is working it's not receiving the garbage. If I can be of any further assistance please feel free to contact me.

Disposer is making a humming sound.

If your disposal is humming but not grinding then shut unit off and use a 1/4 allen wrench in the opening on the bottom of disposal in the center and turn it back and forth with the wrench till you get it freed up. There should be a offset wrench that came with the disposal for this purpose but if you don't have it a regular allen wrench will work. Try running hot water thru disposal while you are turning with allen wrench to help loosen up grease. After you get it turning freely remove allen wrench and turn disposal on . Hopefully this will take care of it but if not repeat until it frees up.
If your unit stops look on the bottom of the disposal for a small red button. This is a reset button. Push it and see if it will run. Hope this helps you. Thanks and have a good year.

Unit was working fine. Ground up some brocolli. Now won't drain. Things tried: 1. Removed u-trap: water drained from sink. 2. Ran water w u-trap removed: water drians from sink. 3. Re-connected...

If you pull the U trap out and run water through the Disposal and it comes out of the pipe, then there is nothing wrong with the drainage through the disposal. It's not clogged. If it isn't running, there is a small red button on the bottom that is a circuit breaker. If the button is sticking out, push it and it will reset the breaker. Every thing else with the Disposal you did perfectly.

It appears to me as though there is a clog after the Trap. There are several ways to unclog it.
A small snake will do normally, unless the clog is far down the drain system, such as between the house and the sewage or septic system. I have used another device with a hose that is a rubber bulb shaped device that attaches to a garden hose at one end and has a **** at the other end. When you put it into a drain pipe and turn on the water, it inflates and anchors itself against the walls of the pipe that is clogged. Then it forces water down the pipe to remove the obstruction.
Here is a photo. You can find these at places like Harbor Freight, Home Depot, etc.
Hope this helps. Happy New Year, Mark

Describe how to use the garbage disposer- currently it doesnot work- humming sound, no grinding

Look on the bottom of garbage dosposal in the center you will see a allen type fiitting. I believe it takes a 5/16 inch allen wrench to fit it.Insert proper size allen wrench and turn it manually back and forth. It sounds to me like you have something in there that that is not allowing it to turn. By using the allen wrench to turn impeller you should be ably to free it up.Sometimes it helps to run very hot water thru it as you are trying to frree it up. If you can get it turning freely with wrench remove wrench and turn disposal on. If it still is not free try above procedure again. If it trys to start and stops buzzimg look closely at bottom of disposal there will be a small red button. This is a reset switch. Push it in and continue trying to free blockage. Hope this helps you. Thanks

I have a Badger 5 1/2 HP garbage disposal. When I turn on the power switch it just makes a humming sound but doesn't engage. Is there a reset button somewhere on the unit that might need a...

There should be a reset button (circuit breaker) on the bottom of the unit. It sounds more like the blades are stuck. Pull the plug on the unit and use an allen wrench on the manual blade turner on the bottom of the unit. If the blades are stuck, you will have to try and loosen them with the allen wrench. If you do get them loose, the question then is what was holding them. Could be debris in the ISE or something broken like a blade. Keep the unit unplugged when working on it.

How do I reset the disposer once I've cleared the blockage? Is there a tool or can I just use a socket or something to tighten it back up?

If the blockage is clear and the disposer is stuck, use an Allen wrench in the bottom center of the unit to turn it, once is loose, press the reset button located right next of where the Allen wrench goes.on the bottom of the disposer.

Won't reset

You should have a disposal key/tool, similar to an Allen wrench. If you do not have one you could use a 1/4 inch Allen wrench. Insert it into keyway at the very bottom of the disposal. You should be able to turn the wrench all the way in both directions. It sounds like something may be caught under the blade. After you free up blade by turning the wrench, it should reset. If that doesn't work, remove the power, then reset then try again. If that does not work, then you will need to replace the disposal.
