How do i get the fabric softener dispenser out to clean on Model MAV6548AWW

Despite giving the model # and serial # and of course make (Maytag), I have not received an answer. I thought I sent my question to Maytag, who should be able to answer my question. Instead I think any response I received came from ordinary people out there who might have experienced what I'm asking for. And finally, I get ads from places that repair Maytags. I'm not paying someone to come to my house and charge me so outrageous amount to tell me what Maytag should be able to tell me with the information I provided. If corporations are now people, where the hell is the person to answer my question?

Not familiar with your particular machines dispensor. But it looks like it should pull right off.

Betty the softener dispenser at the top of the dispenser is a friction fit. So it should pop right off if you can get a good hold of it. Don't pull straight up instead put your hands around the base of the dispenser part but above the agitator part. Pretend you are choking that old maytag repairman, and place your thumbs kind of in the middle or near the top of dispenser and pretend push those thumbs right into his adam's apple. It should pop right off. Good luck.

  • Betty Regan Jan 10, 2013

Thanks B.H. Countryman, but I didn't have any luck. I took a picture of it, but can't seem to attach it to this message. Anyway, the dispenser sits on top of the agitator and has a bluish/gray rubbery band around where the dispenser meets the agitator. I put my thumbs as you said on that rubbery part and pushed really hard. Nothing happened. I really don't understand how this website works though. Are you just some person who has experienced this yourself, or are you someone who represents Maytag? Thanks.

  • B.H. Countryman Jan 10, 2013

Try using really hot water (not boiling but hotter than tap) to loosen stuff up. Sometimes soap residues can really gum up stuff but i've found that heat usually helps. In your case heat and water might be the ticket. Don't burn yourself, and use plenty of water. As to your other question: In my case I'm a guy who owns a laundromat and fixes his own machines. But a lot of "experts" here are probably real techs. There just doesn't seem to be anyone answering "washing machine" questions at the moment, but me. I do own some maytag machines, though not like yours, so i may be incorrect about your situation. For most of us though, we are just peeps with certain skills that like to help others. I'm no hero, but when someone says, "hey you were right! Thanks for the help!" it makes me feel a little heroic. And no we don't get paid for this.

  • B.H. Countryman Jan 10, 2013

Now that i posted the last comment i realize that last sentence, "And no we don't get paid for this." sounds kind of snide. It wasn't supposed to.

  • B.H. Countryman Jan 10, 2013

One more thing, i see stuff like this everyday. I would have told this guy to check his agitator 1st, but the tech (who has impressive enough credentials) told him it was a transmission problem with enough authority he almost had me convinced. But at the very end of the back and forth, when the tech says the part almost never goes out. Ha! what a bunch of hooey!

    Oops forgot the link: http://www.justanswer.com/appliance/1poc...

  • B.H. Countryman Jan 10, 2013

Plus i seriously doubt the gears in the transmission are plastic. I\'ve never opened a maytag tranny, but opened plenty others. I\'ve never seen plastic gears. Just sayin\'.

SOURCE: Fabric softener doesn't dispense

Fabric softener dispensers are notorious for getting all gummed up and clogged. Remove the dispenser cup and soak in some hot water to dissolve all residue. While you have the dispenser removed check under the dispenser cap in the agitator for gummy residue as well. Clean with hot water. There should also be an agitator seal cap under the dispenser. Make sure the cap and rubber o-ring are seated properly. Last of all, if the dispenser has a cone shaped cup inside, make sure it is inserted cone-side UP. The cup is designed to allow fabric softener to roll down the sides of it, NOT hold it. I hope this helps.

There is a 1/4" machine screw in a recessed hole close to the bottom of the agitator. Remove screw. Lift agitator off agitate shaft.

SOURCE: Fabric Softener Won't Dispense

The fabric softener dispenser is notorious for clogging. Liquid fabric softener is essentially a liquid form of wax. After a period of time it begins to gunk up the inside of the fabric softener dispenser. If you remove the dispenser drawer and look into the cavity, there should be a series of holes in the upper part of the compartment where water sprays into all the dispenser trays. These holes get gunked up and clogged and water will not dispense properly. As a result, the washer goes through a complete cycle, but the dispenser stays full. If this is the case, you can take some cotton swabs and/or toothpicks and clean these holes real good. It may be a bit meticulous, but it should take care of the problem. Post back and let me know if this helps.

SOURCE: Dispenser still full of water and fabric softener

My dispenser was always full at the end of the programme. I took the drawer out and pushed a drinking straw down the hole that takes the conditioner into the machine... this was bunged up with gunge... has been fine since.

To get rid of the residue and get your machine sparkling... 1/2 cup of Washing soda crystals on a 60 degree wash. Run machine with no washing and let it run the full cycle..
Add 1 desert spoonful of washing soda to every wash.. sprinkled in the gap in the door seal to keep the machine in tip top condition and smelling great.

You will find your conditioner smells amazing when you get rid of the gunk...

Front loader. Why doesn't fabric softener dispenser empty?

It can be two things. First, what is left in the dispenser? If its the fabric softener, then the water valve may be faulty. The water valve will have multiple feeds and the fabric softener might be bad. If its a combination of water and softener, then the dispenser might be clogged. You can remove the slide out tray and clean it. Look for build up of fabric softener that might be there. Good Luck?

Frigidaire washing machine fabric softner will not dispense out

Hello - There are several things that could cause the fabric softener to not dispense into the washer. Are you sure the liquid in the dispenser after the wash is fabric softener? If it is fabric softener, the solenoid that lets the water into the dispenser is not working. This solenoid is located on the back of the dispenser. It only gets voltage during the dispense time and fills the fabric softener dispenser with water. The fabric softener dispenser fills while the washer is filling for the rinse cycle.

When the washer begins to fill for the rinse cycle, the fabric softener solenoid is energized and water flows into the fabric softener dispenser cup. When the cup is full the water siphons out and softener and water flow into the tub.

If the liquid in the fabric softener dispenser is pure softener you may need a technician to diagnose and repair the problem. The voltage will have to be tested to the softener solenoid and a volt meter is required.

If the liquid in the fabric softener dispenser is water you probably need to clean the dispenser cup. **** will build up in the siphon tube and stop the liquid from going into the washer tub. The incoming water will dilute the softener and overflow the dispenser cup and run into the tub. The instructions for cleaning the dispenser should be located on page 43 of the use and care guide that came with the washer.

If you don't have the use and care guide these instructions will help. Open the dispenser until it stops. In the left rear corner of the dispenser, there is a release that is labeled push. Press down on the push area and you can slide the dispenser drawer out.

Remove the insert from the bleach and fabric softener compartments. Clean the bottom of the insert and the bleach and fabric softener compartments. Reinstall the insert and put the drawer back inside the washer.

To test the siphon action slowly pour water into the fabric softener compartment. When the water level goes above the maximum line stop pouring. The water should all drain out.

Hope this information proves to be helpful however if it is ineffective please contact a professional to move forward accurately.

HI. your model has a dispenser solenoid for the fabric softener dispenser on this unit. If the solenoids are out or malfunctioning, it will render the dispenser useless. i recommend checking the solenoids on the fabric softener dispenser for continuity. The resistance should be 1100+- 7%. replacing this blown solenoid will fix this issue. Remember. the dispenser valve will not function without a working solenoid.

please rate and god bless.

Kenmore front load washer will not dispense fabric softner

I've had this same problem and solved it by removing the detergent/bleach/softener dispenser drawer from the machine and seriously cleaning out all of the "gunk" from the drawer and from inside the drawer area on washer. Sometimes I have had to repeat the cleaning and then the fabric softener begins dispensing again. I have model # 417.43042200 but it may work on all the Kenmore front loading washers.

Fabric softener will not dispense

My wife reported the same problem and I took the top off the washer (2 screws at rear of washer and top slides forward) . Under the top on the left front side behind is the dispenser. On the top is a click adjuster similar to a clock hand pointer and in the center is a tick mark and off to the left side is (-) marks for reduced dispensing and to the right (+) marks for increasing dispensing. I moved the pointer all the way to the plus side and after a few loads the dispenser works fine. I assume over time the different fluids (fabric softener, detergent, etc) tend to gum up the valve mechanism. If this doesn't work I would try pouring some very hot water in it to try and loosen things up. After you try all the free thing, I guess the last option is a new dispenser.

Fabric softener is mostly a liquid wax. It is common for dispensers to have problems if the you use liquid fabric softener a lot. The softener becomes a sticky solid and can gunk up everything over time. I believe the type of dispenser on your washer simply flushes water into the reservoir at a prescribed time and then dispenses into the wash tub. If this reservoir becomes clogged somewhere it may actually be filling up and overflowing into another reservoir in the dispenser and getting dispensed that way. I would try cleaning the dispenser thoroughly, first. Since it IS dispensing (but at the wring time) I don't think you have a control problem. Try cleaning and let me know if this helps. PS Sorry to ignore your request for online assistance. I was already in the middle of typing a solution for you. I hope this was the help you needed.
