Question about Zenith Z42PX2D Television

Open Question

Unit powers up OK and puts up a picture, but then emits an unpleasant tone instead of program audio.

Muting silences the tone and the volume control changes its level. This problem is intermittent - sometimes it comes on just fine, but it can require dozens of power on/off cycles to get it to do so.

SOURCE: Picture black- sound ok

Hello everyone... My Zenith TV popped on 5/5 (popped was the sound it made before the screen went black with but still had sound) and I wasn?t sure what to do. I contacted LG/Zenith to find an authorized repair shop (5/7). Figuring that this all I would be contacting them because the TV was out of warranty. I took the TV set in to get fixed (5/9), I was lucky to find a place that didn?t charge for the evaluation even if I didn?t get it fixed there. They called me a few days later (5/11) to tell me that the Y-sustain board had failed cost around $400 and labor was $225, a $625 dollar fix. I tried to haggle with there marked up price for the board but no luck there he told me that they usually only mark up 10/15 percent on replacement parts and couldn?t knock that off because I didn?t buy the TV there and that there labor was a standard $225 no matter how quick the fix (not that this is an easy fix because I have no idea). So reluctantly I authorized them to continue with the fix. They called Wednesday (5/16) and told me that I could pick it up anytime and was working beautifully. I nervously called Zenith late last night (5/16) 1-877-9zenith(1-877-993-6484) to talk to about the warranty, because I saw someone else here had a little luck with this. Even though my Zenith TV is out of the 1 year warranty, I told them, that they had told me, they were going to cover it under the LG 2 year warranty. Even though they never said this in the previous call, he could only find a record that I had called. I told them about the other people who had the same problem who had theirs covered and had posted on web that LG/Zenith covered it even though it was out of Zenith warranty date. After they put me on hold for a long time, he came back with a contact and a fax number for them to send in the paper work so they could look at it. I contacted the repair shop (5/17) and told them that Zenith was going to cover it under the LG (2 year) warranty and he thought that this made sense because they are the same. I gave him the contact information and he made a few calls to the warranty department or the company that covers the warranties for LG or Zenith (I am not sure about this part of it). He couldn?t get a hold of the exact contact that I gave him because it was only a first name and fax number but he did get a hold of someone else that could help. He told me that they were going to cover the parts under the LG warranty but they weren?t sure about the labor and they were going to call him back. He also told me that I shouldn?t pick it up or do anything until this was settled and that he would call me back. He told me this because he didn?t want me to pay for anything; he has heard that it is very hard for consumers to get reimbursed after the fact for warranty work. I was fine with this since I couldn?t pick it up until tomorrow anyway. He called about a half hour later and told me that they were going to cover both parts and labor for this. He also told me that some of the repairs done on other earlier TVs might have been done before the new revision of boards and that might be why they were having the same problem again but wasn?t completely sure about that. He just wanted to offer his conclusion to why the problem might be happening again. Well take from my story what you will, but I figured that I would just post it for everyone to read. And maybe this will help someone else? -jkt

It sounds like you've done quite a bit of troubleshooting, which I applaud you for doing. Have you tried power cycling the TV? Simply turn off the TV, unplug it (and any components connected to it), then plug it back in and turn it on after a minute. See if this corrects the issue. If it doesn't, then I would recommend calling our Product Support team to schedule repairs at:

I have an old Technics SA-GX300 receiver that works fine except that the screen indicates that muting is on (still produces volume but at much lower levels). I lost the remote to the receiver. Is there...

Reliance on the remote instead of walking across the room to touch the unit will not solve anything. On many receivers, Muting is cancelled if the volume knob is turned to a louder level. Try that.

There's a used original remote for $12 delivered on eBay right now.

Why does my pioneer vsx-d557 automatically go into MUTING WHEN I turn it on?

Maybe you have MUTING selected. Turn the volume knob up or toggle the Mute control on the remote.

If it defaults to muting on power up find the manual and search it for a default volume setting.

Is there a way to disable the voice recognition button on my Samsung intensity??? Whenever I go to slide it, I hit the button, and my phone talks, even when i hav the volume on vibrate only.

I have the same problem with my Intensity every time I keep it in my pocket. Unfortunately, you can't disable the voice recognition function completely, but you can make it more managable.

You can get rid of the voice that says "Please say a command" when you hit the voice recognition button, and instead make it just a single tone by following these steps:

- Hit the voice recognition button on the side of the phone
- Press the right option button to go to the Settings
- Go to #5, Prompts
- Select Mode
- Select Tones Only (the last option)
- Hit OK

You can also reduce the volume by changing the output from the speakerphone to the ear piece, to make it quieter. Go to the Prompts menu like you did above, and select #2, Audio playback. Set it to "earpiece" and hit OK.

Now, when you accidentally hit that button, the phone will just emit a short tone that you probably won't even hear. Hope that helps!

My Pioneer Receiver (SX-255R) won't play anything. I only have a CD player connected to it. The screen only says "Muting." I've tried unplugging it for 30 minutes and re-connecting. Still says...

Just to be sure we are talking the same unit I have included the link to the user manual for SX-255R

Suggestions
1. have you tried to press the Muting button on the remote unit.
(item 11 remote unit diagram)? does it make any diffrence - what if the button is stuck?

2. Have you tried to play the Tuner radio - what happens then? do you still get Muting.

3. You mentioned something about speaker wire coming out.
I understand that Pioneer receivers shut off if any of the speakers is faulty, ie, correct impedance is not showing at the speaker input point.
Usually the newer units give an "overload" message. It is possible this could be happening and the SX-255R gives the "muting" message instead. Some people have reported very minute shorts where strands of the speaker wire touch the body and it causes "overload".

One way to check is to remove speakers wires one by one and see if the "muting" goes away. Then you can check the offending speaker if that is what is happening.

Good luck

Onkyo TX-SR705 Muting Problem

if what Dark_Orbit said does not work try doing a master reset by ressing and holding the dvr/vcr button and stand by button simultaneously. This would erase all your assignments so you would need to reassign all your sources hooked up to your onkyo.

Did you check that you didn't activate mute?
If it is on mute. Press both volume buttons at the same time you will hear two descending audio tones.

Hi,

If you are referring to the receive audio, possibly the reason it is soft/weak are:
1. defective internal speaker - try using an external speaker;
2. volume control - try rotating back & forth till you get satisfactory level. In some cases, you may need to clean the inside of the volume control with an electronic contact cleaner. At worst is that it has to be replaced;
3. defective amplifier - between the volume control and the speaker is the audio amplifier. This is a single op-amp IC U501 (TDA1519A); and/or
4. muting - which is a bit complicated. This is triggered either by the squelch or by the CTCSS tone decoder. You may have partial/false muting. You need to check Q501 (MMBT3904) and its associated circuitry.

Other than #1, most fix would require opening the unit and familiarity with electronic circuitry & components, use of a DVM and soldering iron. Perhaps your best bet would be to seek the services of a qualified communication technician.

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
