Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

I have a 35 year old Sears garage door opener.

When I press the button it goes about 3/4 the way up and then reverses itself and goes back down

Also most of the time it will not work unless you take the electric power chord out of the socket then plug it back in, then it will work

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is a door sensor problem. Make sure the small light on each sensor is not flickering ever so slightly. Tweak them a bit.

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is a sensor problem. Check them very closely. If they are just a little off one of them will be flickering but it is difficult to see. This can also cause the problem to be intermittent. Tweak them just a little.

It is normal for that light to blink randomly.

Door goes up when I press the button, but not down

If when you close the door the main light flashes 10 times and the door reverses to the open position it is a door sensor problem. Check to make sure the small light on each sensor is lit and not flashing. They must be pointed at one another to work properly.

My garage door bucks like a bronco

You have a door problem. The reason the door is reversing to the open position is because when it bucks the safety senses something wrong. Release the door from the opener and operate it by hand. You should find something.

When the door reverses to the open position and the main light flashes 10 times it is a door sensor problem. Usually the sensors get bumped and need to be tweaked so that they are once again pointed at one another. Each sensor has a small light that must be on for them to work. The light on one sensor stays lit all the time and the other sensor light is only on when they are pointed at one another.

The flashing light in your wall control is a separate problem. One of the buttons on the wall control has an icon of a lock. Press and hold it for 3 seconds and release. It should stop flashing.

The door reverses back to open position instead of closing

SOUNDS LIKE A SENSITIVITY ISSUE UNHOOK THE DOOR AND TRY IT MANUALLY TO BE SURE IT DOESN'T BIND OR IS TOO HARD TO OPEN OR CLOSE.

IF ALL IS WELL CHECK THE SENSITIVITY SETTINGS ON THE BACK OR SIDE OF THE OPENER.

YOU WANT THIS SET AS LOW AS POSSIBLE AND STILL OPERATE THE DOOR WITHOUT REVERSING.

NOTE: THE FULL RANGE OF ADJUSTMENT IS ONLY ABOUT 3/4 TURN SO MAKE A VERY SLIGHT ADJUSTMENT AND THEN TRY IT AGAIN.

HOPE THIS HELPS

Sears garage door opener problems

We had the same problem.  open the unit and checkt the connections.  we had a few loose wires and every time there was a vibration whether a low flying plane or a truck nearby the door went up.  My husband found a few of the wires had loosened up.
