Question about Computers & Internet
Is this a laptop or a desktop? If it's a laptop, disable the track pad with the function keys and see if it still runs away.

There are some things you should do on your own:
1) Gather information. You need to know your Gateway model and S/N, Windows version (XP, Vista, 7, 32bit or 64bit)
To check windows version: Right-click My Computer or Computer from Start menu, choose properties. You should be able to see the Windows version here
2) Go to Gateway website:
Click on the "Notebooks" tab and input your S/N.
3) Scroll down to "Touchpad Drivers" section and download the latest driver for your model. Be sure to save the file where you can find it.
4) Install the new driver. It may be helpful to uninstall the old driver first: Start>>Right-click (My)Computer >> Manage >> In left pane, Device Manager >> In Right Pane, click plus sign next to, Mice and Other pointing devices >> Right -click the touchpad and click Uninstall, be sure to check the box, "Remove Software".
See if this gets better. If not, the touchpad/Palm rest needs to be replaced, but getting Gateway to do it (sounds like they tried) may be tough.
At least if you install the new driver, you may be able to disable it permanently, and then use a wireless mouse (which usually is much nicer anyway).

SOURCE: I have a brand new
Download the latest drivers for the touchpad from Sony's site and install them.
If this is brand new however, I would be VERY inclined to return it for a refund or repair / testing. A brand new laptop should not do this and moreover, you should not at this stage of its life be expected to make alterations and adjustments.
