HELP!! Connection Issues

posted by gamble45 on Jun 29, 2007

I'll try to keep it brief;
New laptop (2 weeks), Acer Aspire 3690.
I'm having intermittant connection issues. Sometimes can't stay connected for more than 10 seconds..sometimes i can stay connected for hours and hours.
My husband has a laptop (gateway) has never had a problem with connection. Can go anywhere in the house.
I haven't found anything consistant causing interference.
Have uninstalled/reinstalled the network card. Disabled firewalls, disabled Acer E-net. Re-configured the D-link router. Checked absolutely every setting on my laptop i can think of. Unplugged the microwave, cordless phones, etc. Changed the channel on the router to auto-select.
I've been told that possibly it may be a faulty antenna that is built in? Help because I don't want to send it away unless i have to. I can't understand what the problem is and all the techs in tech support know less than me.
The windows connection icon will tell me I'm connected but i can't get on the internet, then the icon will change to tell me i have lminited access, etc. It's not a conflict with other networks in range, i've ruled that out.
I'm desperate! There's more i've done but too many things to list.
Thank you kindly for your help :) I'm ready to huk this thing...

Thanks for your QUICK response! Wow!
Okay, I checked the routers IP address against the assigned address for my cable company and it's exactly the same (no need to change it?).
I switched the router to Channel 1 (was on 6) and I still checked the "auto select" button.
I should mention that even when I'm disconnected, it'll still show the signal strength as excellent!? No consistancy there.
Also, oddly enough....I seem to have much better luck in the evenings, daytime is the worse time.
Why is it that my husband can be in the TUB and have no issues? and my brand new lappie can't even stay connected next to my cp? Grrrrr

Thanks again, You guys Rock!!! Much more knowledgeable than tech support. They told me send it in to replace the card!

I think Tech Support is hiring if you want a job.
If your using DHCP you can try to assign an IP address. Assign a channel on the router not auto-select. But it does sound like just a weak connection. Not hardware related. I'm sure your laptop is just fine.
Without spending alot of money, try another brand router. If it works, great. If you get the same results (bad connection), take the router back and get your money back.
If all else fails, take your laptop to a place that has a wireless internet connection (Circuit City, BestBuy, StarBucks, Etc..) and see if it works there. You may need to change the location of the router.
