Steve:

The terminals for the power head plug into a terminal inside the machine. You'll need to unplug the machine from the wall and open the canister to find where the terminal wires plug into. You probably need to open the lower half of the canister to find those terminal plugs. It would help if you have a multimeter. The wires actually run through the hose, so I would check the hose carefully to see if the wires have been damaged there.

Why is my power head not working

You either have a broken power cable going to the head or your canister isn't supplying power to the head, or the motor for the head it bad.

There is no power to my Filter Queen power nozzle. I have cleaned the connection and there is still nothing.

There is an electrical connection at the canister end and again at the beater end. If the beater is not working it is mostly that this is where you problem is. You need to test first to see if there is power at the canister end and then at the beater end. If there is no power at the canister it could be the outlet or something internal. If there is no power at the beater end then that outlet, or the cord could be the problem. If you have power and that end then the problem is likely within the wiring in the beater or in the motor itself

Kenmore Powermate power head not working

I've got the same problem. Try checking out the electrical connection where the hose attaches to the canister. The hot male terminal is corroded and the female socket is burned out. Its an unfortunate design flaw that every time you open the vacuum to replace the bag the electrical connection disconnects and reconnects. Not sure if I can find replacement parts for a 10 year old vacuum or if a home-made re-wiring job is in order. Will find out tomorrow.

My power head on my Kenmore canister sweeper dont work right. How do I get it apart and fix the problem?

Try pushing the reset button on the top of the power head first. There is a protection system on Kenmore canisters that protect the belt from breaking, and if something was vacuumed up into the head, it will cause this reset switch to activate to protect the belt. On the top of the power head look for the a small red button, or a grey button that says overload protection switch, and push down on it.

If the power nozzle lights are coming on, and the machine is making noise, then this means that the belt may be off inside the head, however if you're not getting any power, and the head light is not coming on, then this is probably a bad hose on the unit.

I have written a detailed repair on how to replace the belt on the Kenmore canisters on Fixya, just follow the link below. The only difference on the one I helped repair and yours may be the that the screws are actually located on the bottom of the power nozzle rather then underneath of the headlight cover. The other steps will be the same, just unscrew the screws on the bottom of the power head.

Here's the link:
http://www.fixya.com/support/t4499227-need_replace_belt_in_kenmore_vacuum

Please let me know if this didn't fix it, and I'll help you walk through this further and help you diagnosis the power head further.

Thanks,

Chris J.

Power Head keeps cutting in and out while vacuuming???Canister motor keeps running but the power head starts and stops like there is a short or some loss of connection somewhere. Any ideas?

The electrical terminal at the top of the extension wand may be loose or corroded. Unplug the vacuum and remove the wand from the hose assembly. Look at the 2 prongs and clean off any corrosion using a a Q-tip or scrape with a screwdiver if it's more persistent. After cleaning reconnect the wand to the hose and try it again. If the prongs are not corroded, they might be loose instead or they might not be aligned properly. If this is the case then bending the prongs very slightly may help realign them. The part that may be giving you the trouble is called the terminal cover (PN 8191782). It costs about $10 but the problem is knowing the procedure to actually replace the part. CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN HOW TO OPEN UP THE EXTENSION WAND TO REPLACE THE TERMINAL COVER ??

The beater does not work. the restart button is not burnt or the switch

Remove the hose and reinstall using the alignment arrow at the top of the hose insert. Be sure the hose clicks securely and does not twist or rotate right or left.
Then remove the power head from the wand and eliminate the wand. Plug the head directly onto the hose and plug the cord into the wire socket under the hose.
Flip the switch on the head fully back and forth to see if the head will run without the wand. If it runs put the wand back in place and inspect electrical connections and plug terminals when reinstalling. Post back with what you see and results

Wiring schmatic for kenmore canistar vacuum

Generally, there are two wires inside the unit which connect to the wiring going down the suction hose.  Since the unit is a/c...it doesn't matter which of them goes to which terminal.  The wires are switched in some cases.  Look for the open terminal.

Electrical to power head

Greetings from GoVacuum,

There could be a couple of reasons why you are not getting power to your power brush. The first and most popular reason is the hose of the machine. Sometimes the wires inside of the hose will go bad, causing the power not to get down to the power brush, but the rest of the vacuum working well.

You can test this hose easily. You will need to go out and purchase a continuity tester from Home Depot or Radio Shack. When the electrical test is in the continuity position, remove the hose from the canister, and put one of the testers on one of the electrical prongs that plugs into the canister itself, and put the other tester into socket where hose connects into the wand, you should have continuity on both terminals. It is important that the switch that controls the power brush is turned to the on position. If one of the terminals does not have continuity, you will need to replace the hose itself.

If both terminals have continuity, then you should then follow the same procedures on the electrical wand. If the wand tests ok as well, you may have a loose connection in the power brush.

Please let me know if none of these solutions work for you, I can then shoot a video showing you how to open the power brush to check for loose connections.

You do have a Miele S548, correct?
