Transmission telltale light comes on, stays on and the car acceleration becomes sluggish

Just replaced my gear box of a 2001 bmw 318i E46 with an automatic transmission. When the transmission first selects a gear from a start position the vehicle jerks violently but moves ok thereafter. However, after a little while the tranmission tell tale sign comes on and the car acceleration becomes less responsive as one feels some resisitance from the accelerator peddle, particularly when i want to move again after slowing down at an intersection.

Transmission is detecting a fault in either a sensor or a control actuator and it is defaulting to a "limp home mode" so it can still be driven without destroying the transmission.

Check all the wiring, grounds, and fluid level, and be sure the proper fluid was used.

They might have to warranty that transmission. Or Re-Flash the Computer to run it properly.

this is the check engine light does it come on then off? did it stay on? if this light is comming on any one of a hundred or more thing can cause it. from a loose gas cap to a sticking sensor. you might want to have it hooked to a computer to see what is causing it might be a minor problem like low washer fluid and it could be the start of a serious one. these lights remind you of scheduled maintinance, low fluids, oil changes ect depending on the manufacturer standards.i would check all of the fluids and if they are ok then get it checked better to be safe than sorry

if the transmission was low on fluid you may have worn some parts, take this to a shop that specializes in BMW transmissions, this is not for the local transmission guy, special tools needed to test the transmission, may have to be re-programed

Removing and fitting a new gear knob bmw e46 318i man trans

Hi joserosa if this is a manual gearbox you just have to grip the gear knob and pull upwards until the gear knob is removed, the same principle is applied for a auto box but hold in the release button while removing, regards Mark.

Check gearbox light, car drives sluggish, heater cuts off.

You have a bad gearbox position sensor located on the transmission. When the transmission computer sees the fault in that sensor it goes into a protective mode in your car starts out in second gear that's why it is sluggish. This is a very common failure on that car. The heater issue is not related.
