I have a canister with a beater bar which I love. I have sucked up a sock (or something) in the beater bar and it will not work. I can't get it open to check it out. We have misplaced the booklet that came with it.
Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The best thing to do is to see if you can open the power mate or powerhead, the sock is jammed in there and blocking the path of the dust and dirt. There should be some screws on the bottom to release the bottom plate or the top cover will come off, it would be one or the other it probably is stick in the gooseneck the swivel neck portion of the vacuum and or the wands or hose. If you need further help look in the owner’s manual or contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or call Sears cust serv listed below. If you need an owner’s manual Sears or your manufacturer will provide one for you if you give them the brand name and model #. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

SOURCE: Beater head makes loud noise on 'carpet' mode

Possibly a belt problem, but more than likely a brushroll problem.
The bearings are cheap and nasty, and are prone to siezing.

If you visit http://www.sparesaver.com/help-and-support/dyson-section/dyson-technical-advice-450/ they have alot of info on repairing dyson cleaners AND they sell the parts, cheapest ive seen online.

Hope that helps

Beater brush will not spin never has. Followed directions on vac did not help. After removing screws will not come apart so I could check the belt or perhaps something jammed

You did not state your model, some have a brush roll shut-off lever or switch, make sure it is working properly. Replace the belt if you have one.

Tip

Burning rubber smell from your vacuum?

Drive belt is slipping.

Remover cover from the bottom of the power head or base if upright style. Usually just 2 to 4 screws.

You will see a belt (thick rubber band) connecting the beater bar (roller with brushes) to the motor. Remove the beater bar and belt. You do not need to remove the motor. The beater bar will be held by clamps and screws. Remove the screws and clamps and lift the beater bar directly up.

Take the belt to your local vacuum dealer (note make and model) and get a replacement.

Installation is the reverse of removal.

Note: you will find a lot of hair and junk twisted around the beater bar. Take the time now to cut it all off.

Hope this helped. Please rate this if it helped you.

I have a kenmore model 116.25512506. The roller is spinning but no suction from the head. The attachments have suction but not the head. How do I remove bottom cover to check for blockage?

Is the suction control plastic ring shut?. If it's wide open you get almost no suction. See picture.
25823072-bhx41vpbxgcw2fhkwng0wody-1-0.jpg If that is closed check the long metal wand. Disconnect from the beater bar head and check the whole length of the wand and look into the beater bar head opening for something plugging it.

I have an Eureka Altima Model 2961AVZ vacuum that suddenly stopped picking up. I have taken it apart, checked the belt which was fine, replaced the hepa filter, and checked for clogs in all the hoses

Is the beater bar actually turning when the power is turned on? Sometimes the belt is fine, but something is jammed and keeping the beater bar from turning. What about the section behind the beater bar, but before the hose upright. I've found large pieces of paper jammed in here and then hair gets caught, ultimately blocking the whole system. Usually you have to turn it over, remove some screws and disconnect the belt and beater bar to get underneath. Just reassemble it in the reverse order to how you took it apart. Double check the hoses and run a "unwound" metal coat hanger through to unclog anything. Does the vacuum " suck" with the hose or tube up to it disconnected? If not you may have a motor that somehow got junk pulled into it. You can open this up as well and clean this out. Of course unplug it all before doing anything.

When cleaning the machine, did you do a good job of cleaning the beater brush and making sure it turned freely in the holders on each end? Perhaps a bit of WD40? Also, a new set of belts might help a bit.

I sucked up a piece of fabric and turned it off ASAP. Now the beater bar won't work, but the beater bar does turn. Help!

If the clothe is jammed in the power head you will need to clear it. Have the unit unplugged and manually rotate the beater bar to work the jammed material out. Sometimes a pair of pliers helps to grip the material while turning the beater bar. If there is no longer a jam then the drive belt may have been damaged and needs to be replaced. Usually when this happens the brush does not rotate. You can get a belt often at hardware stores such as ACE, or as a last resort, the dealer.

The vacuum is on and sucking--but the beater bar will not turn on. Its not that its not rotating, the motor sound from the head does not come on.

If it is anything like ours, it is the circuit board. Needs replacing and like everything else Miele, it is expensive. Wish I had gotten something else. Tired of throwing money away to fix our Miele!

My vacuum doesnt **** dirt from the floor but sucks dirt with the nozzle.

Probably have a clogged intake from the beater bar thru to the vac system.. Try this.. with the vac unplugged, flip the vac over so you can get to the bottom of the vac head near where the brush rotates.. then depending on the model.. remove the cover to access the brush ( called a beater bar).
Once the cover has been removed ( may require removing several screws) .. look at the beater bar and make sure the belt is hooked up.. you should be able to lift that brush assembly out of the housing to expose the duct where dirt travels into the bag.. that path ( including the flex hose) is probably clogged up...clean out any debris found there.. ( if you have access to another vacuum..try sucking that junk out with it or use a stick or coat hanger to pry anything lodged in there out.. When that is clear, reassemble things and try it again.. Hope this helps you
