If when you run it you smell gas stop running it!
You should shut the gas valve off immediately!
If the gas heater isn't working when your running it it's probably the Valve the activates the gas (Selenoid) or the Ingnitor that lights it!

Why is my timer not counting down, and no heat?

Make sure the vent and heater air intake are not clogged with lint. Also, check the gas pilot to make sure it is not blocked up with gas line sediment, and the ignitor is working properly. The timer is probably waiting for a signal from the flame sensor.

I have a 2002 27" kenmore elite gas dryer that runs great except you have to hold down the start button. I took it all apart and cleaned it. The motor looked fine. I think it might be the start button.

When the dryer is cold the heater flame will

The heating circuit is working perfectly except for the solenoid coils as indicated by the occasional glowing of the igniter but no gas is ignited. A gas valve closes as the solenoid coil weakens as it gets hot and does not open until it has cooled down. Replace both gas valve solenoid coils to get the dryer back into proper operation. The solenoid coils are part numbers 694539 and 694540 but also can be purchased as a kit here.

This dryer worked great until it stopped heating

There are four main components for the heater to operate control thermostat, igniter, flame sensor, and gas valve coils if one of this is not working the unit will never heat. That if is gas. If is electric control thermostat most likely needs to be replaced

Dryer works gas cuts on and off

Remove the exhaust vent from the rear and run the dryer.
If it works OK..clean the vent internally to the dryer as well as externally.
If this is not a problem or it does the same on/off then:
Replace the gas valve coils. They have gotten weak

Gas dryer/will not heat

If when you run it you smell gas please stop running it!
You should shut the gas valve off immediately anyway!
If the gas heater isn't working when your running it it's probably the Valve that activates the gas (Selenoid) or the Ingnitor that lights it!
It could be the burner which distributes the gas in which case you would smell gas.
My best guess......the ignitor!
