SOURCE: I have a Whirlpool washer

There are tiny "dogs" that need to be replaced. this is a result of overloading and not enough water. The pieces are under 10 bucks and not very hard to install, but tricky. Special tools not needed. They are called agitator pawls, I think.

How do I remove the agitator from my Kenmore Washer model number 110.24962300 to clean under it as clothes are coming out with flakes of dirt and soap-scum pieces etc. on them?

Follow these detailed step-by-step instructions to help you locate and replace your Kenmore worn agitator cogs:
  1. Before you begin this or any other repair, disconnect the power supply to your washing machine. Either unplug the unit from the wall outlet, trip the appropriate switch in your fuse panel, or remove the correct fuse from your home's fuse box.
  2. Raise the lid of your washing machine, and if your model uses a fabric softener dispenser, remove it from the top of the agitator by pulling it straight up and off.
  3. Pry off the agitator's cap (if there is one) by wedging a small flat head screwdriver into the slot between the agitator and the cap.
  4. Reach into the agitator top and pull up on the barrier cap and its seal (also called a gasket) to remove them.
  5. Use a socket wrench with an extension or a nut driver to remove the stud and the seal that hold the agitator top to the shaft of the agitator base.
  6. Remove the agitator top by pulling it up off the agitator base. Turn the agitator top over, enabling the cam and the worn directional cogs to slide out. Examine the cam for wear, it also may need replacing.
  7. Attach each of the new directional cogs to the cam. The small round piece at the base of each 'ear' is fitted into one of the cam's four slots. Your model may or may not make use of a black plastic agitator cam bearing. This cam bearing is used to help hold the cogs in place. If your model uses one, make sure you put it back on during the reassembly process.
  8. Carefully insert the cam and new directional cogs into the agitator top the same way they came out. Place the agitator top over the agitator base. There are tabs on the top of the agitator base that line up with, and fit into, the slots of the cam.
  9. If the cogs fall out of place during re-assembly, you will have to take the cam out of the agitator top again and re-insert the cogs.
  10. Push down on the cam until its slots and the base's tabs snap together.
  11. Insert the stud and seal into the shaft and use your wrench or nut driver to tighten.
  12. Make sure the black rubber gasket (seal) is situated properly in the groove of the barrier cap. Then push the barrier cap and seal down into the agitator past the holes.
  13. Replace the agitator's cap or fabric dispenser, whichever your model uses.
  14. Close the lid of your washing machine. Reconnect the power supply and test the machine to make sure it is working properly.
That should do the job for You. Hope this was helpful

Agitator won't spin. Only swivels back and forth when I apply direct pressure down on the center of agitator.

This a very common concern and an easy and cheap fix the agitator cogs are worn out you can order the parts online part number wpl285751 or just 285751 about $4.00 (agaitor directional cogs) or dog ears. or a complete repair kit #285746 about $14.00 I would go with the kit. With parts in hand pop of the fabric softener dispenser then you will see an agitator cap with a pair of pliers pull up and remove the cap,now you will see one bolt remove this bolt and you will be able to remove the top part of the agitator replace you worn parts and reinstall and you will be agitating like new,,,Sounds like a lot I know but its really a 10 minute job Good Luck

Agitator gear is stripped

just place both feet on the agitator as it sits on the floor and lift up on the top half. there are plastic tabs on the bottom half that hold the two pieces together. you will need to remove the 2 tabs before putting the 2 pieces together. the bolt that you screw the agitator down with will hold the 2 pieces together. Top load Whirlpool washing machine

Many Whirlpool built 'direct drive' washers use a 2 piece agitator. There are cogs called 'dogs' or 'dog ears' and a cam between the two halves of the agitator which can wear leading to a clicking/ticking sound and reduced movement of the top agitator section during the wash cycle leading to poor cleaning results. In most cases these worn parts can be replaced without much cost or difficulty. If you have this style of washer this should help.
