HP 21 black and HP 22 tricolor cartridges are the cartridges compatible with HP DESKJET D1560.HP 27 and 28 won't work with your printer because they won't get recognized by the machine. It will only give you an error message like incompatible cartridges.
If it is going through the motions of printing, the head is moving back and forward as it should, then this is a simple cartridge issue.
Sometimes if the printer has been unused for a while the cartridges can semi-dry. try this link below to get them flowing again.
Hope this helps
The gray cable is most likely is th USB cable, take alook at the 2 end. one end is in A configuration (retangle) and the other end is B configuration (square).
the B end is connected to the rear of the printer. the A is connected to the laptop A plug (same retangle plug).
While new printers usually have special sensors on the cartridge specifically designed to prevent unauthorized refilling, I think you're in luck with the D1560.
From what I've seen it looks like you just have to refill the cartridge through it's fill hole, which is underneith the label. All the refill kits out there do not mention any reset software, so this cartridge probably doesn't have a sensor on it.
Just make sure you get ink that is designed for that cartridge. Ink comes in different viscocities and it's important you get the same kind as what the original cartridge contained.
Drivers for Win '98 may not be available for this printer. Checked HP's website online manual. Nothing is said about support for Win '98. Options- upgrade your computer to Win XP (you might need some hardware upgrades, RAM, Hard disk etc.). Purchase a new or newer computer. There is the possibility you might be able to use drivers for an older HP Deskjet, such as the DJ694 or DJ8xx series. Drivers are downloadable from HP's website.
USB cable: First, do you have USB connections on your machine? If you don't know what they look like, look online, or a computer store salesperson could show you. It is possible your Win '98 machine doesn't have them-
