Someone is using my bandwidth my modem lights are flashing

My bill for internet in the last two months has been way higher than usual due to extra bandwidth usage. We are doing nothing different. I have tried to call Bell and they reset my modem..but it is still bad. The lights on my modem are flashing like crazy and when I do a usage check it shows that the upload is huge.

Visit sites like SpeedTest.net to test your bandwidth.
Speed Test provides a free broadband connection analysis that test a user's internet speed against other servers.

Click the Begin Test icon and notate the bandwidth speed test results.

Most often when you sign a internet contract you are guaranteed a certain speed that your computer will operate at.

The results presented are a user's download and upload bandwidth speeds. These results allow you to measure how fast your computer is downloading and uploading information.

Look at your internet contract with your service provider.
Compare the notated Speed Test results against what your bandwidth is supposed to be according to your contract.

If your modem is operating under speed, contact your service provider and have the representative reset the bandwidth or make a request to upgrade to a faster modem.

Hard wired ethernet is much faster than wireless

When your ISP offers you a 1Mb connection, its megaBits not MegaBytes.

So for a rough guide of how MUCH you can download, divide by eight. i.e. 1Mb speed = 128KB of data.

So its normal for you to get 1.0-1.10 mbps download speed for the 10MBps connection that

you have

hope this helps

Someone may have hacked into your router and is using up your bandwidth.

go into the router and change (or enable) the security settings. If you don't require wireless, DISABLE it.
unplug and reconnect the modem/router
reset the computer.

PS - don't think that just because your wireless security is configured that someone can't hop onto it.
I have an old P-III laptop that can crack a 128 bit WEP key in 8 minutes!
Disable the wireless if you don't need it or change to WPA/WPA2 personal.

It may even be that someone hadn't hacked in to your system YET but was attempting to...one of the tricks to hacking a WEP key is to inject signals at a high rate of speed which would bring your router to a crawl.

My modem ADSL data light keeps flashing and sometimes does not appear affecting my ability to acces the Internet.
I usually have to re-boot my computer and this seems to solve the problem for a time. It is very inconsistant and anoying.Thank youM. Davis

ADSL DATA light flashes says there is internet activity (Internet status: Connected)...
ADSL DATA when off says there is no internet activity (Internet status: Not Connected)...

This occurs when there is a lot of noise in your telephone line...
It is adviced to do a line test in this case to find the amount of noise in your line...
If there is a lot of noise your modem will lose the internet connectivity and will try to re-establish the connection with ISP...
In this case the ADSL DATA light switches between OFF and ON...

One more thing...
ADSL SYNC light should be steady...
If it is blinking is says there is no syncronisation between your modem and ISP...

Check the reset buton it may not put properly adjusted, so it may be put the evice abck to reset. if this is okay, try and put off the device disconnect all cables that link to it. put it on without connecting it, then see if it is rest it self, it it doesn't then plug the cable one by one. this should help. good luck

Dropping Connection

All the LED except power should be flashing, that indicates traffic flow, power should be steady.

If all wired and wireless connections fail it is unlikely the router, more likely the cable/adsl modem that is dropping connection. Test by connecting a pc directly to the cable modem, watch for dropouts. If fails, contact your ISP service dept for line check and do a cable speed check from an online source.

Check also terms of service for the package you bought, many low end services restrict speeds below dialup if you go over your transfer limit. Multiple pcs playing online games use a lot of bandwidth. the speed restriction may put you below the threshhold for game server

Slow internet responses

MTU Means Maximum transmission unit In computer networking, the term Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) refers to the size (in bytes) of the largest packet that a given layer of a communications protocol can pass onwards. MTU parameters usually appear in association with a communications interface (NIC, serial port, etc.). The MTU may be fixed by standards (as is the case with Ethernet) or decided at connect time (as is usually the case with point-to-point serial links). A higher MTU brings higher bandwidth efficiency. However, large packets can block up a slow interface for some time, increasing the lag for further packets. For example, a 1500 byte packet, the largest allowed by Ethernet at the network layer (and hence most of the Internet), would tie up a 14.4k modem for about one second
