Question about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 Digital Camera

1 Answer

DMC-FZ20 says 'no memory card' - but there is!

I've tried multiple memory cards - the camea used to work beautifully, then it just stopped reading the SD cards. Is there a way to clean the contacts in the camera? Everything else in the camera works. Sending it out is too costly.

I don't think I can offer you a solution, but I have a few things to look at.
Firstly, dont put anything in the card slot to "clean the contacts". You my bend them - this brings us to the next step, can you get a torch and look into that tiny slot and see that all the contacts are in their neat little row, or is one bent up out of the way (very unlikely).
Of any of the cards you've taken out of the camera, especially the old one, are any dirty, tarnished/corroded, or have one very badly coloured contact compared to the others?
I Don't know how old this camera is, but I think it's about 18-24months old. Although there was hint back then on the newer SD cards coming out, there is no mention of the different SD type in the cameras specs so I'm going to suggest to you that maybe this camera is compatible to just the older (original) SD M-type cards, which are usually under 1GB (although do go to 2GB). Note the type of other cards you are trying in the camera and see if they are larger capacity new H-type cards. Try a small, 512mb or less, old card in it (if you don't have one go to a retail store and ask them if you can try one, they're likely to have testers behind the counter).
Also try and just insert and remove repeatedly your card in the camera - in, out, in, out, to wear the contacts ""dont do this while the camera is on""
Please let me know how it goes.

I have a panasonic lumix DMC-FZ20 camera that i installed an 8g memory card but it says memory card error

The DMC-FZ20 works with MMC and SD cards, 2GB or smaller. Your 8GB card is an SDHC card, which fits into the slot but is electronically incompatible.

My Panasonic DMC-FZ20 says Memory Card Error.

Hi
Please check your cameras capability to support larger sized SD cards. It may not support those two SD cards. Also check for slide locks on the side of the cards and slide them to 'open' before inserting.

Hope it helps.Thanks!

How big a memory card can you put in a DMC-FZ20 camera? I just got an 8 GB card and get "Memory Card Error" all the time. The old 256 MB card works fine.

An 8GB card is not SD, but SDHC (High Capacity). SDHC cards fit the same slot as SD cards, but they are slightly different and many cameras do not work with them.

I have a DMC-FZ20 myself, and use a 1GB card. That is really plenty of space. If you want more (going on holiday?) then just carry a couple of spares. The manual doesn't mention memory cards larger than 1GB. Probably there weren't any when it was written.

Does the panasonic DMC FZ20 take HC SD cards?

I have this camera, and have just tried putting an 8Gb SDHC card into it. As soon as I tried to take a picture I got beeping and "Memory Card Error" across the center of the screen.

I never tried this before because a gigabyte has always been plenty of space for my uses. I suppose you could just carry a few spare smaller memory cards instead of trying to fit a big one. They take up less space than film!

Hi: I have a lumix/Panasonic DMC-FS3. I keep getting a message "Memory Card Error. Please check the card." Nothing has happened to the card. What could cause that?

Has the memory card ever worked in this camera? If yes, try downloading all the pictures to your computer then format the memory card using the camera setip menu. If this is a new camera, Make sure the camera can use the SD HC type memory cards. Some older cameras cannot read the SDHC but are fine with the SD cards.

What is the maximum size of sd card that can be used in the lumix fz20 ?

This camera uses the SD standard - not SD HC. The highest capacity mentioned in the manual is 1GB althought the SD stanard supports up to 4GB.

The memory card has a small slide lock on it. It may have been inadvertantly locked. Just slide the lock to the other position and try card again.
