How do you disable touch pad on Inspiron 1501 laptop with XP.
In your system you should be using synaptics touchpad driver. First of all look for it under mouse properties in control panel. If its not there then install in from support.dell.com. Under this application you would be having option to disable touchpad when external mouse connected. Try this.

You should see a touch pad icon in the task bar. Right click it and disable device in the device select tab. Good luck. Let me know how you made out, and please rate my answer.
You can look at what options are available by double clicking the synaptecs touchpad icon in the system tray, bottome right corner of the task bar.
There may be an option to disable it in there, but if not you can always remove the keyboard and unplug it from the motherboard, generally the top strip with the power button and quicktouch buttons will unsnap and expose 3 or 4 small screws to remove the keyboard.
Also as mocmarquez stated their may be an option in the BIOS to disable the device, but the BIOS can be a cryptic place for novice users and you do not want to change anything in there unless you are sure what it will do, most dells BIOS can be accessed by pressing F2 during startup (at the dell logo)
To enter the BIOS setup in your computer, press the F2 key as it starts. You will be presented with a list of all the stuff in your computer.

I have no idea how to do that. I need detailed instructions. Thanks,
I don't see the touch pad icon in the task bar. Would be great if I could find it and disable it. Thank you.
Mine is running Vista and there is no tap or icon anywhere for the touch pad
You should be able to do this by changing your input settings in the BIOS. At startup simply select the command to enter BIOS and then just search around until you find it...if you need further details let me know.
