Question about Sony BRAVIA KDL-40S2000 40 in. LCD HDTV

Sony Bravia KDL 40S2010 No Picture

2 year old LCD TV just stopped displaying the picture. Have cycled through HDMI, S-Video, and standard connections with same result... sound but NO PICTURE. Tried trouble shooting with SONY - was worthless.

What's the probable cause and is it something a reasonably skilled individual can tackle?

There does not appear to be any discernable picture. The screen lights up to a dark blue grey when powered up but even with the flashlight I cannot seem to see any picture. Any other ideas?

    The menus are not available...

  • sdpreda Jan 20, 2009

no blinking lights... just the steady green power light

  • sdpreda Jan 20, 2009

OK... I'll tear it apart this weekend and test the power. Seems like a new power supply is reasonably priced. Will let you know.

  • sdpreda Jan 31, 2009

OK... bought a replacement power supply on-line, replaced the unit, and the symptoms are the same. What now?

  • sdpreda Jan 31, 2009

RE your comment... not sure who but one of your folks said that a steady green LED light with no video might be the 24V power supply... that's why I swapped the units out.

  • sdpreda Jan 31, 2009

TV is a Sony KDL 40S2010

There's no "i" button on the remote but the menu button does not return any video. There's also no video cue from the processor that there's no signal... something you normally get when cycling through the input options.

  • sdpreda Jan 31, 2009

The display button has no effect.

There is light coming from the rear... I can see it through the plastic connectors that pierce the metal of the display unit.

  • sdpreda Jan 31, 2009

The cable appears to be connected OK...

  • sdpreda Feb 14, 2009

Have now changed power supply and B board with no success. Any new ideas? AU board?

  • sdpreda Feb 19, 2009

Is the T-Con board the LCD controller? What is the part number?

This is not a power supply problem, when it is a power supply the TV does not start at all. However on some model the inverter is built in on PSU

Check all connections at the back, try resetting the TV by unplugging it for a while.

If you still get no picture, that means that there is an internal fault,

If you get no backlight , or picture is there but very dim, then you have a defective inverter.

If the inverter results fine after testing it (there is need to check continuity on inverter fuse, test components, and read voltages), then it is usually either a bad LCD ribbon cable or connector, or a defective LCD controller, that is the board that generates signal sent to display.

The TV must be tested with a replacement LCD cable, or the cable tested for continuity using a multimeter.

If the cable, and inverter board are fine, then the problem is a bad video chipset on LCD controller board.
The controller board is not serviceable, and when this happens the board must be replaced.

Here the replacement parts.

Call the seller if the replacement part is not listed.

Can you see a "faint image"?

If there is no image with the flashlight (when the TV is acting up)
then you have an issue with the main board. There is usually just one
board in these TVs that controls video processing and display. It may
have an intermittent problem - solder joint, maybe a bad cap. You would
have to open her up to figure that out

so its probably the backlight inverter board or the backlight controller IC

If you have backlight and no video you have a bad main board or a bad LCD controller. The controller is only availabe with the panel as a replacment. The main board is connected to the controller via the LVDS cable. This can be identified as the cable that connects to the module @ the top of thr LCD panel. Now if you have menu display you have a bad main board. It`s module replacemnt only and yes you can do it yourself. If you need part numbers provide the serial # and I will make sure you get the correct part #.I am an authorized Sony service center.

I take it the screen lights up in the dark? If you see no lines only a slick screen I would think its safe to say you have a bad main board.Sony has many diffrent versions of panels and software written into the main boards according to the panel used.Do not just order a main board according to model # or you may end up with the wrong main board. It`s happend to me and Sony has many bullitens that prevent this from happening.

I just looked at the block diagram for this unit and based on the symptoms you have provided all roads lead to the BU board as the culprit.I checked all bulitens and it would be safe to replace this module with Sony part # A-1179-493-A.

If the sound is working it means part of the power supply supply circuitry is working. The 12 and 5 volts seems to be there but the power for the backlight inverter board might be missing. I would suggest to check the voltages from the power supply if you are able to do it. The absence of video, it means that the 24 are missing or low.

No LED Blinks means back Light is working and TV is just muted on Video.

Unplug TV from AC outlet for 10-15 minutes and replug in and check.

Who suggested to check Power Supply here?

  • Shahid Electronics
    Shahid Electronics Jan 31, 2009

OK, let me know exact model of TV.
Please also check do you see On-Screen display when you press " i " (info) button on TV remote?
If TV gives on-screen display that means video processing has problem or might be video connection issue.

  • Shahid Electronics
    Shahid Electronics Jan 31, 2009

If remote does not have i button then please press Display button to see any on-screen display.
Please also check back-light is working by taking off its back cover, any light coming from any hole of metal sheet at rear of TV. There are many holes in metal sheet and this is basically package of LCD panel.

Below is an image of rear side of LCD panel, its just for reference.

  • Shahid Electronics
    Shahid Electronics Jan 31, 2009

Good, that means LCD Panel and back light inverter board is just fine.
Please check following image and check connecting cable is plugged properly in connector at both ends. (it is different model image and just for reference)

If that cable is misaligned or not plugged, no video on LCD will be result and TV wont show any error either.

    Thanks for update,
AU and BU boards are suspected but I would recommend to test these boards in same model TV before placing an order to part store.
    Part numbers are as follows..

    A-1192-415-D AU BOARD, COMPLETE

    A-1179-493-A BU BOARD, MOUNTED (SERVICE)

Below an image showing location of boards in KDL-40S2010

I do not think AU Board is defective.
I would suggest to test below mentioned T-Con board. Your TV has sound but no picture and T-Con board can stop picture presentation on LCD where as sound would remain OK.

Here is T-Con Board (LCD Controller) at Shop Jimmy.
In Sony Part Policy, it is not an individual part and will be supplied with LCD Panel which is of course expensive.

My Sony Bravia picture looks red. It is one year old. I have tried unplugging it and turning it off. Nothing works.

It's a Sony, that's the problem. They build them with bugs in it. there are circuits in Sony TVs that don't have anything to do with the TV but when they go bad, the TV stops working. You can't get Sony to do anything without paying them. If you have a warranty, use it. You could try searching every forum out there, but likely you will be stuck with a bad TV.

Sony KDL40S2010 Bravia LCD TV... turns off / on on it's own

If TV does not remain in standby and turns on itself then power switch on top of it could be defective and power supply board is also suspected. Take off its back cover and unplug top switch connector just to confirm is that cause of On-Off its own. If problem still exist then power supply board has problem and will be replaced. Let me know the results to move forward.

How to improve picture quality sharpness?

PICTURE QUALITY IS USUALLY A FUNTION OF IT'S SOURCE. GARBAGE IN GARBAGE OUT.
IF YOU HAVE COMCAST OR SATELLITE AND IT IS NOT HD, YOU NEED TO HAVE AN HD SIGNAL FOR THE BEST PICTURE. THE BEST INPUT IS THRU THE HDMI INPUT. IF YOUR UNIT HAS A GOOD PICTURE WITH YOUR DVD UNIT, THEN THE HAVE A SIGNAL SOURCE ISSUE.

It very much depends on:
the model of DVD player you have and whether it is a standard or blu-ray player
the settings on the player
the type of connection (component and HDMI will yield a better picture)
