MS offers a free and legal image of Windows 7 at My Digital life dot com. You must own and have a working MS Product Key sticker with Win 7 on your computer. Plus the version must match your sticker in order for the key to work. Look for the correct image!

Download. Burn ISO to make bootable install disk and reinstall. GL

Dell recovery will not work in a Toshiba Laptop. Just make sure the boot order is set to CD/DVD driver first that will automatically start the CD/DVD driver when disc is loaded.

On a monthly hardware diagnostics check,a surface scan failed the test.Is there a free tool to fix this problem avbailable to download?

This error often means that a physical spot on the hard drive has failed. Additional spots are likely to fail soon. Back up your data (build a recovery disc set if you haven't done so) and then get a new hard drive to replace the old one as soon as possible. (You may want to get drive cloning software - which will copy even the hidden recovery partition to your new drive.)

Rarely, the error means that a file is corrupted on the disc. Programs like SpinRite, http://www.grc.com/intro.htm , or HDD Regenerator, http://www.dposoft.net/ , may solve the problem. I'd still plan to invest in a new hard drive.

If your computer is still under warranty (with an extended warranty since you list Vista as the OS), contact the manufacturer about the problem.

I wish that I had better news for you.

Cindy Wells
(Drives will fail. This scan is meant to let you save your data before the drive completely dies. Since you have Vista, the hard drive was assembled at least 3 years ago and could be more than 6 years old.)

I have an Acer Aspire x1700 and it will not reboot, I cannot locate the reboot disk. How can you help?

Yuo need a lot of try and error to be successful.
First your OS and the BOOT disk that comes with your machine. But if you dont had the CD you need to buy and download it.
Store like Bestbuy,CompUSA,etc.. sell this CD,s or go to this LINK where you can buy it online and download it, choose your OS and any other specs about your System.
After all you need to BURN the files in a blank CD or order for mail shipment.

Then we going to BOOT the system id the CD drive.

To rebuild your hard drive, do the following:
  1. Power up your Acer system.
  2. When prompted (after memory testing completes), press CTRL + ALT + ESC to enter CMOS setup.
  3. At the CMOS Setup screen select Advanced BIOS Features
  4. Verify the Boot Options Sequence is set to the following order:
    1st [CD-ROM]
    2nd [Floppy Disk]
    3rd [Hard Disk]
  5. Insert the Acer System CD, DISK 1 in your CD-ROM drive.
  6. Press F10 to exit and save. When prompted, Do you want to save CMOS data?, select [Yes], then press ENTER.
  7. The system will reboot from the CD-ROM. After booting from the CD-ROM, you will see the Acer Hard Drive Rebuild options displayed.

Note: Use your mouse for choice selections during the HDD recovery process. The mouse will respond slowly during this procedure, DO NOT press the Enter key. Pressing the Enter key will cause the HDD recovery process to terminate.
  8. Select HDD Full Rebuild and follow the on-screen instructions.
  9. When prompted to insert Acer Recovery CD, DISK 2, wait for the CD-ROM to eject DISK 1.
  10. Close the CD-ROM tray and click OK. The system will continue to rebuild the hard drive back to factory load.
After being prompted to remove disk and restart system the unit will load system software and hardware. During this process the system will reboot several times.
Your Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (COA) ID number will automatically be entered for you. Should you need this number for any reason, look for your Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (COA) ID number on the cover of your system.

Hard disk is damage what can i do...?

Give it to the authorised service station and claim the warranty. They will backup your data and possibly replace with another HDD. There are many expert technicians who can retrieve data from a HDD even if its damaged.

New Hard drive

The two hard drive names will not make a difference and are compatible. Installing the new drive is not all that hard assuming you have all the programs and the OS. Using the back up OS will be your best bet. Just install the hard drive and then place the back up disc in the CD or DVD drive and boot up the computer. This will act as a temp OS system loading basic features allowing your system to recover from the disc. Just follow the on screen sinstructions and your on your way.

If given the choice make sure you select format the new drive the recover disc may do this for you automatically.

Let me know if I can help.

Joe

TIP: If the old drive is accessable picking up a SATA to USB connector will allow you to use the drive as a slave in your computer to recover some of your saved files stored on your old drive.

System recovery

It sounds like the boot sector on your main hard drive is corrupted. You should have created an emergency boot disk when you first purchased the computer. Since you don't have the oroginals you should borrow a system CD from a friend and boot up that way and try to a recovery. Selecting F8 during the bootup sequence allows one to start if Safe mode, but I believe (I usually run Linux) you still need the boot sector on the main hard drive to be valid in order for this to work. The F1 gets you to the Bios screen (?) where you can select the boot sequence (hard drive, CD, or floppy first/second/third), among other things. Hopefully someone with more Windows experience than I can assistance better than I can, I just thought I'd throw that out there.
