Magnet issue? how do i tell if my magnet needs to be re-glue'd. my xbox wont read discs sometimes and if i shake it it works about 20% of the time. i don't like doing this... but it worked. i took it apart and opened up my drive and the thing on the top seems to be loose. would that be it?

No the thing on top is supposed to move. It sounds like eather a scratched disc or you need to clean the laser lens on the drive.

Xbox 360 wont read games

Hello Shawn Francis,

This problem happens to a very high percentage of consumers of the Microsoft Xbox 360 Console, so there is no need to fret. The "Open Tray" problem is a common problem, thus' there is a way you can fix it. Most solutions require you to open the console, unless the solution is banging on the top of the console, which I don't recommend.

- Reader -- When your Xbox 360 console is opened, open the disk tray and inspect the reader. This may be dirty. Try to clean it off with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. There is NO need to assemble the xbox back together when doing each step. Plug in all needed cables into the Xbox 360 and try BEFORE you re-assemble it.

- Magnet -- Inspect the top cover of the disk tray and you will see a black circle, and on the other side, (underneath the sticker,) a silver circle. That silver circle is the magnet that keeps a game disc in place as it spins. It may be out of place, and causing the game disc to move everywhere, not letting the reader read it. There are several methods to take the magnet and the black holder off of the disc tray top cover, just try a YouTube search. Once that is off, you can place the magnet and the black cover onto the Xbox 360 disc spinner, and the disc tray problem will most likely be solved.

If you have any other problems, or concerns, feel free to contact me at any time.

My xbox isn't reading the disc when I put it in

This could be a magnet issue on top of the dvd drive motor, if it has become dislodged the motor will not engage so the console thinks there is no game, if this is the case the motor will need stripping down and the magnet sticking back on, you can try a quick fix to this problem, lay the console down flat insert a game, when it is trying to load give the console a rap with your knuckles(dont go mad) a couple of times where the centre of the game should be, this could dislodge the magnet, this is only a quick fix the magnet will need to be glued back on.
let me know how you get on.

It will read some disks but not all disks and the ones it readds i try to play latter and it dont read

i had this problem with my xbox and its due to either the laser or the magnet within the disc drive that holds the disc in place. the magnet may have come loose which mean u can either open the drive up to try and reposition it, or replace the drive all together. my suggestion would be to send the xbox to microsoft if under warranty or send it to a third party company to see if they can fix it. buying a new drive for your xbox involves some very complex firmware flashing which is not advised

Open Tray

DVD wont close
I just solved this problem, very simple actually. Possibly can happen when the drive WILL close, but then loud noise as it tries to spin the disc up. Open the drive up (4 little screws on the bottom) and lift the lid up. If you look on the top white magnet spinner, the bottom side of the magnet system broke off of the disc motor. It will look like a little metal ring stuck to the white spinner thing whatever it's called. I popped that off and examined it, then used some krazy glue to stick it back on the motor spindle and it's away and going now. The reason the drive will not close, is because when the little magnet first breaks off it can get misaligned then when it tries to shut it gets in the way. The MAY be the cause to the problem. I fixed this issue today with mine, hitachi drive.

good luck

The laser going bad is a pretty common issue with the drives, since it's a Hitachi that spindle motor could be all gunked up with dirt as well and cause that issue also.
if ya have a Hitachi, if it's a Samsung it could just be the laser.
