Question about Dell Dimension 8400 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Cannot print I have a Dell Dimension 8400 with 1 gb memory & running XP. I installed a HP Officejet J6450 and was not able to print emails, web pages or MS 2003 Office Professional documents such as Excel, etc. After jumping thru the hoops with HP trying a number of their suggestions I gave up & bought a Epson Workforce 500. I am having the same issues - no comm with the printer or only partial prints. Now I am thinking that perhaps the new all-in-one printers are no longer compatible with my Dell PC or vice-versa. Any ideas?? Thanks - Rex

Let me add that I have returned the HP printers (I had tried 2 different models) and have since purchased an Epson WorkForce 500. I am getting the same results. I have upgraded the Bios and installed a new USB 2.0 PCI card. I have also tried 3 different USB cables. So far, no joy. According to the specs for my PC I am also running a 350 Watt power supply. The OS is XP Pro with SP2. Being a mainframe software engineer this is a bit humbling.

Did you try checking the installed printer ports that I mentioned earlier? I'm a systems administrator and was surprised to learn once upon a time that that LPT1 port wasn't showig?

Right-click your My computer icon and choose properties, click the Hardware tab and then Device Manager, expand "Ports (Com & LPT)". What is listed underneath? We're looking for something like ECP Printer Port (LPT1). Seeing the (LPT1) is critical here. Let me know what you see.

Reinstalled Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 8400 and The local area connection is not detected. Cannot seem to find drivers through Dell support

Dell Dimension 8400 PC"s use either Broadcom Extreme Ethernet controllers OR, on SOME models of the 8400 that do NOT have ON-board Ethernet connections, SMC Networks Ethernet Drivers. I've seen MANY a Dell Dimension.

Set up cd rom dell dimension 8400

Hello Download drivers here at dell:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/dimension-8400

The drivers can be downloaded one by one.

You maybe need to unzip the file before you install.

Here is only drivers for win xp.

You can`t download a setup disk but you can call dell support
to order the software from them (if they still have it) by the service tag.

Good luck

Dell 8400 Boots to Black Error Screen in XP States to reinstall System 32

This might be caused by hard-drive failure. You should run hard drive test from BIOS to make sure hard drive is ok. You can access BIOS by pressing F2 during start up, from there start hard disk self test and wait for it to complete.

If hard drive is ok after test, insert in your original Windows installation media and reinstall OS.

Dimension 8400 locks up. Keyboard won't respond.

Generally and indication of a software issue that is locking the system. There can be hardware causes too.

  1. Run diags on the system (From Resource CD or F12 menu) see if any failure. If you have a hardware failure then address it and see if the problem is solved.
  2. Update bios and drivers from support.dell.com
  3. Edit MSCONFIG, startup group, remove entries that are not required (Generally only AV and printer scanner items are needed here, most other items will function without and item here)
  4. Edit the Virtual Memory settings, and set it to Custom and an amount double the RAM (EG: 4 GB RAM set initial and Mas to 8200 MB VRAM)

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 that I just installed a new sata hard drive on. I've tried many times but I can't get 'windows XP' installed. It's a brand new hard drive and I formatted it when I tried to...

Is i giving any errors when you try to install? You may need to download the Sata controller Drivers from Dell and when prompted choose the F6 option and install them then.

Hope this helps,
David

My dell dimension 8400 bios a03 fails to bootup and displays this alert on the screen: Many attempts to boot the system have failed at checkpoint [Ithr]. how can i recover from this?

You need to reset your bios settings. Open your case and remove the cmos battery for 10 minutes. Caution: unplug all ac plugs before you open your case. put the battery back in and turn it on you should see an error message saying: you need to set system time and date. If you see this then you have successfully reset your bios settings and the defaults should load up. follow the instructions to change your time and date settings and save. reboot and hopefully you can boot up. I hope this works.

Can Dell Dimension 8400 intel celeron work with 3 gig ram

Yes it can but try to match up at least two, to gain the advantage of dual channel and when you buy your extra ram, check that it matches the other two that you have in size, speed and technology (like 3x1G DDR2 same speed). Also you may have to play with which slot to put the third one but I had this one run with three modules before yes.

Otherwise your Dell Dimension 8400 can see upto a maximum of 4.0 GB memory, with maximum of 1GB per slot in 4 (2 banks of 2) memory slots.

Dell 8400 new memory

If you are using Windows XP, go into your control panel, double click System (from classic view), and look towards the bottom where it says "Processor x.xx GHz, x.xx GB of RAM" and make sure your 2.00 GB of RAM is recognized by Windows. Next I would make sure you are using 400- or 533-MHz DDR2 unbuffered SDRAM. If you are, try removing one of the two modules and see if the computer runs smoothly. If it does, I would install a different brand of memory.
