Frigidaire Front Load Washer drum noise

Our Frigidaire Front Load Washer seems to have a part or object between the rotating and outer drum. When revving up for the spin cycles there is a loud banging in the back of the drum. The drive pulley and shock mounts seem to be fine. The outer drum isn’t hitting anything. I can reproduce the sound by tapping on the plastic outer drum. Other than the noise it seems to run fine. Can a normal handyman take the drum out break it apart and get it back together and back in place. We just got the machine with a house and were told that it had some new parts in it but it was noisy. It’s so noisy that whatever is making the noise will cause a catastrophic failure if it were allowed to continue.

    It's not the belt.

  • Keith Burton Jan 19, 2009

    The belt is also fine.

  • Keith Burton Jan 20, 2009

The noise is coming from inside the drum. Another source advised that items from the laundry (toys, coins , keys) have found their way into that space.

  • Keith Burton Jan 20, 2009

    It's not the agitator.

  • Keith Burton Jan 20, 2009

You were right but not all that helpful. What I really needed was help on taking it apart. I found the bad bearing when I got the thing apart. I know where there's a washer that a guy gave up on because it was leaking around the door. He thinks the front tub is cracked.

They are assembled by regular people with simplish tools so you should be able to repair it yourself. Most machines are made with the final assembly screws on the inside of the door opening. The screws holding the hinges also hold the front panel on. One remove there may be screws at ground level at the front. The door will come away and the front panel should be removeable. Access to the gap between the drums is often straightforward from there.

From the exploded view, it looks to be a fairly straight forward process for someone mechanically inclined. But I don't think you will find something loose inside. I think you will find some wear points where something is mis-aligned or warped. If that shroud is plastic, it could be warped, or, one or more of the rollers the drum rides on could have a flat spot on it.

Let me know what you find, and I'll give you further direction.

If the tub seal lets go water will weep into the tub bearing. This will rust the basket shaft and normally wreck the tub bearing. Once the bearings starts to get worn enough it usually gets very noisy. The tub bearing is pressed onto the outer back half of the tub shell assembly. Normally need to replace the inner basket/shaft assembly  and the outer shell with the tub bearing.
Sometimes the inner basket support will crack, this can give an clicking or banging noise as well.

to remove the drum gasket and clean it just click the link and follow the instructions

Sounds like the agitator came loose. I would not trust a handy man to fix I would call a repair man to do it right the first time.

Most noises from a washing machine occur during the spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping during the spin, the load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it. Repeat these steps if necessary.

Hi - Try to rotate the drum when it is not in use, manually and see if you notice the sound as well. If you do the drum is not balanced and you would need a professional technician to diagnose the bearing and pulley system behind the drum for repairs.

Dear fixya, I have a hotpoint aquarius wma52 which sounds like it grinds when drum turns. I gather it may be the bearing but I don't see how to take off the back and check to replace.thankyou

HI,
First of all, is the noise only heard when the drum is rotating or when the pump is running? This really makes the difference. Sometimes an object can rub on the outer tub during rotation and cause the same noise, other times, I have found foreign object within the pump and caused the same problem. So when is the noise heard is very important to lead you in the correct direction.
I will be glad to assist you if you like

Have you check the pump, all front load washer drain before filling. If you have coins or foreign object inside pump the can be the cause of scraping noise. I would also check the tub for nails or object that can poke through and tub on the outer tub during rotation. Most of the time its a foreign object in the pump issue. Good luck..

It sounds like the spider arm supports in your washer has failed. The spider arms hold the stainless steel wash drum to the axle. You need to stop using the machine immediately since the wash drum is flopping around the plastic tub. It is an expensive fix. The replacement drum/spider can cost over $300 with shipping. Get a few estimates before deciding whether to repair or replace. Sorry.

I have a zanussi washer/dryer but lately its making so much noise !! its driving me nuts please tell me what it could be ?? thanks

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. If your washer is a front load washer then check these things if it is making noise--
Bellows
The bellows is a rubber sleeve that seals the suspended outer tub to the stationary cabinet front at the tub opening. Its purpose is to provide a water tight opening into the tub that can be sealed by the cabinet door, yet allow flexibility for the oscillation of the tub during the wash and spin cycles.
Outer Tub Assembly
The outer tub assembly is supported by two suspension springs and stabilized by two air shock assemblies. A cement counter weight is mounted to the front of the outer tub by screws. A counterweight is molded into the rear half of the outer tub. These counterweights prevent excessive oscillation of the entire suspended assembly during an unbalanced spin cycle.
Spin Basket Assembly
The spin basket is constructed of stainless steel. The circumference of the basket is perforated to allow water to flow through it as it revolves. A heavy steel shaft is pressed into the spin basket support which is then bolted to the basket. The spin basket assembly is entirely supported by two ball bearings pressed into the rear of the outer tub. A large drive pulley is mounted to the free end of the shaft that extends through the rear of the outer tub. There are three plastic vanes mounted to the spin basket to aid in the washing action during the wash cycle. The rotation of the spin basket provides both the washing action during the wash cycle, and water extraction during the spin cycle.

High pitch "jet engine" noise--A certain amount of motor whine is normal during the spin cycle.

Rattling and clanking noise--
• Foreign objects such as coins or safety pins may be in drum or pump. Stop washer and check drum. If noise continues after washer is restarted, objects may be in pump.
• Belt buckles and metal fasteners are hitting wash drum. To prevent unnecessary noise and damage to drum, fasten fasteners and turn items inside out.

Squealing sound or hot rubber odor-- Washer is overloaded. Do not overload washer. Stop washer and reduce load.

Thumping sound— Heavy wash loads may produce a thumping sound. This is usually normal. If sound continues, washer is probably out of balance. Stop washer and redistribute wash load.

Vibrating noise--
• Washer is not resting firmly on floor. Move washer so it rests firmly on floor. Adjust leveling legs. NOTE: Some shaking of the washer is normal without moving across the floor. See INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for details.
• Shipping bolts and foam blocks have not been removed during installation. See INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for removing shipping bolts and foam blocks.
• Wash load unevenly distributed in drum. Stop washer and rearrange wash load.

Please do rate the solution and revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Rylee

The rear drum support must be replaced. The supporting ball has eaten into the support cup.The belt will have stretched and must be replaced also. You can do the job yourself.

I have a frigidaire gallery front load washer need help

Run the machine on a cycle with no load in it (no soap powder either)

If it makes the same noise when there are no clothes in it then the suspension legs have given way or the counterweight has come loose.
You will need someone who knows what they are doing to repair it

Makes a noise like there are rocks or coins when it spins

If it is thumping... you have a broken spider on the inner stainless steel drum. Major defect with this machine. You'll need to call to get a new washer tub assembly... comes complete with inner stainless steel drum and outer plastic drum already assembled and ready to install. Good luck.!

Grinding noise when drum rotates

may be a foreign object trapped in between the inner and outer tub. Major Disassembly required to split the outer tub. May also be the rear bearing in which case back half will have to be replaced.
