Question about Kenmore 73503 Stainless Steel Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Frig and freezer not cooling

I have a kenmore elite model 596.7350201 refrigerator and I've been hearing a clicking noise coming from it. It has quit cooling and the freezer section is thawed out. What what I've read, this could be a capacitor problem an overload relay problem or both. I hope it is not the compressor itself. What do you think?

I Have the same problem on my 76503. The Fan is running but it seem like the compressor is not working and the fridge is not cooling.

My compressor died on this relatively modern machine. I am very unhappy, and strongly suggest avoiding this model.
To invest this kind of money and wind up with a doorstop on a long-term appliance is insulting.

It's running but stops cooling almost every other day. Have cleaned everything - just stops cooling. I unplug for a few minutes and it usually starts cooling soon. Help!!!

It is possible that a start relay has gone bad but more likely is that the compressor has seized up. if the unit is under 5 years old most likely the comp will be under warranty from sears. peyton

I have a kenmore elite side by side bottom freeze frig. There is a huming noise coming from the frig.sounds like the compressor. The freezer is starting to frost over. I can make the noise stop by opening...

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.
The humming noise your hearing is the evaporator fan blades striking the ice build up on the evaporator. The fact that you have ice build up is a sure sign your refrigerator is not defrosting.
The door switch controls power to the evaporator fan.

I am going to use this model number 106.57071791 as a parts reference that MAY be different from your actual model but it is close. This model is a mechanical control refrigerator. You may have the electronic control version.

Take a look at item 6 this link:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-10657071791/0582/0165000/P8100197/00012?blt=06&prst=&shdMod=

It will be located in the top left of center & front of your fresh food compartment. It will be circular and will have 2 tabs on it with an incline so that if you were to rotate the tabs with something flat it would only turn ONE direction.

Either use your finger nail or something flat to SLOWLY rotate that until you hear an audible click. (Everyting stops but the lights) This is initiating an automatic defrost cycle. After about an hour come back and check to see if your refrigerator has re-started. If it has not restarted there is definately a problem with the automtic defrost circuit. That can be the timer (listed above), The defrost element under the evaporator, the Bi-metal thermostat on the evaporator or wiring.

All parts can be found via this link / section
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-10657071791/0582/0165000?pathTaken=

If none of the links work go to http://www.searspartsdirect.com and enter your model number where it says find it fast and choose model search.

I guessed at the model number so if this does not resemble your refrigerator or you have the electonic control board type refrigerator please respond with your model number.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Kelly

Freezer works but frig is not cooling

I don't know this particular frig, but evidently the defroster doesn't work. Frost buildup has blocked the flow of cold air.

There is a defrost timer, under the frig, accessible from the front. You can turn it with a screw driver. Turn it till you hear a click. If the timer hasn't been turning, that should turn on the defroster, a heating element nested among the freezer coils. Wait half an hour and if it is defrosting, water should be dripping into the drip pan underneath the frig. If so, then replace the defrost timer and you're good to go.

If that doesn't make it defrost, then the problem is probably the defrost thermostat, in with the freezer coils. When the frig defrosts, the defrost heater stays on until the defrost thermostat gets warm. It should be open circuit while warm. But if it is open circuit while cold, it is bad and is the cause of your defrost problem.

If you open up the freezer coils, use a hair dryer to defrost. That is safer than hot water.

Hope you can fix it.
