Question about Polaris 380: Polaris Booster Pump

1 Answer

Polaris 380 booster pump seal leak

I have a Polaris 380 and the booster pump has developed a lslow leak at the fitting leading into the top of the pump. The pool man who came out to the house today said the pump is also leaking "at the seal". I am being told the pump is at the end of its "useful life: and rather than replace the forward seal and impeller assembly I need to buy a whole new pump. The pump is a little over 7 years old. Any advice?

The main question I have is if the "useful life" observation is accurate. Granted the pump is about 7 1/2 years old but it only runs 2-3 hours per day.

If you are trying to fix it to save some money , my advice is don't do it because it will leak again sooner than later , best bet replace the pump!!

It might not be your booster pump. First, check the filter screen and clean if necessary. Often, this is the only problem when these pool cleaners are having problems. Clean the skimmer, pump, and filter also. You will also want to check all connections and hoses to make sure that you don't have a leak.

My pb4 booster pump is leaking from the booster pump bracket and making a ''whining'' noise when turned on????

Replacing the pumps mechanical seal should fix the leak. The whinning may be from bearing damage due to the leak. If you are unsure how to fix it, try a local electric motor repair shop. We charge about $55 - $60 for that seal and bearings installed.

The Hayward booster pump would work but being in the same price range the Polaris is engineered for its cleaner

Your bearing are failing. Replacing them and the seal at a local electric motor repair shop will likely cost around $50.
