Re: Canon MP730 "carrige jam" error frequently
This error will generate when the printhead holder cannot move. This is usually due to a paper jam. Clear the jam (or whatever might be obstructing it) and then press "Resume". Do NOT try to move the printhead holder manually.
As for cleaning your printer, here is the owners guide from Canon.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

If you open the printer cover you should be able to see a guide bar where the print carrige runs, if you can touch it feel if it is dry, if it is very dry (it may have black residue) then you will need to wipe the bar with a tissue or rag to clean it and then with a toothpick carefully add some singer oil (Machine Oil) maby 4 -5 drops along the bar, and slowly move the print carrige over the newly oiled section this should lubricate the bar again and stop your carrige jam issues

You may not see a paper jam.
This may work for you, it has worked for many here I given this advice so gave it a try it could work for you.
Generally when this happens, something has fallen into the printer, or a piece of paper has been jammed in there.
First step, remove the ink cartridge, and turn the printer upside down and gently shake it, see if anything comes out.
If nothing goes, or you can't hear anything rattling around, get a piece of cardstock paper (60lb or heavier) and gently push this through the printer, to see if it will help push out what might be stuck in there. And gave the rode that the ink slides on a good clean and maybe a bit oil on cloth and wipe the rod with it. Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

No solutions really. I have the same problem. I have a service manual. It takes a few hours to take it apart. I took out the ASF (automatic sheet feeder) unit out and cleaned it thoroughly, used compressed air to clean any sensors, and to no avail. It did absolutely nothing.
The ASF unit is one of the last things you get to.....so it is a big pain.
If you want the pages on taking it apart, feel free to email me at niedae AT iwon DOT com. Be sure to use tape to associate the screws with the various service parts.
If you figure it out..please post your fix.
