Question about Western Digital 1TB WD ELEMENTS USB 20DESKTOP EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE

1 Answer

How do I change permissions on WD Elements 1TB on a PC?

When I connect the drive to a computer other than the one to which I ORIGINALLY connected it, I can write new files to the drive but cannot modify or copy any files already on the drive.

You have to be the computers administrator to change any values on any hard drive on your computer. Click start control panel user accounts on the users tab click the name of the computer Administrator you must have full control. Click start click to open on my computer you should see your drive could be E: or something right click select properties there will be an array of options select the sharing tab option then advanced sharing make sure you have a tick in the share this folder box then click permissions make sure you have all 3 boxes ticked full control changes and read in windows 7 If you are running a Windows XP OS then you might be able to:
Click start right click on my computer select open

Right click the icon of your Drive (It should be F:/ or something)
Click Properties in the menu that comes up
Click the Sharing tab
Click permissions
And finally, click Allow next to Full Control.

Hope this helps

SOURCE: My computer recognizes the WD but i cant view my files

Sounds like to me you already did the troubleshooting. If you cannot get the drive to function properly on another computer and it has the same symptoms, then logic would say that it is your drive. Note to also use a different cable to make sure it isn't the cable. I would try it on at least two more computers to make sure, hopefully with at least XP and Vista.

SOURCE: I can no longer access any of my files on my wd1tb network drive

Hello,

It sounds like either the NAS enclosure or the drive(s) inside have failed.

If the enclosure has failed and you don't have any crucial files on it that you don't already have elsewhere, contact www.westerndigital.com for a warranty replacement.

If the enclosure has failed and you DO have important files on it, try having your local PC shop move the hard drive(s) into a new enclosure, if that works you're done, buy the new enclosure.

If the new enclosure fails, your drive is damaged and you will need a pro to help get back your files. If this is the case, reply back with you location(Country, State and City) and I will pass along recommendations for your neck of the woods.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

You have a bad power supply. You can probably get a new adapter for it.

My WD elements 1.3 TB external hardisk. It gives a buzz when connected and is not recognised by windows

It sounds like the HDD inside is dead. The USB interface may have an issue but usually clicking or buzzing is HDD failure. If you have a desktop you can try removing the hard drive from the external case and connecting it directly to the computer using a SATA cable.

MAC computers use a different filesystem to arange data on your hard drive, if you are switching back and forth between Windows and MAC platforms, you will need to reformat the drive to the FAT32 filesystem.

To do this, from your Windows system, connect your drive, right click on the drive and select Format, select FAT32 from the Filesystem drop down menu. Once the format is complete you should be able to use the drive on either system.

The only way you can check physically is to change the USB cable. The other softwares that can assist :

1. Head to WD website and download diagnostic tool that may troubleshoot the hard disk but once it is recognized.

2. Try connecting it to a different PC running Windows.

3. You can check if the HD is being detected or not in BIOS menu. If it is being detected proceed to step 1, if not then change cables. If still it is problematic then you have to contact official support from WD for this.

Hd only switches on briefly the shuts it's self down

If it has another connector type ie firewire or usb ( the opposite of what you are using ) then try that.

If its usb then you can go into device manager and un install the usb hub under usb devices etc and re install your motherboard drivers and re connect the hard drive also if you have a laptop or a friends computer you can connect it to temporarily to install it on just to see if it works on there computer - if it does then that means the hard drive is fine if not then it points at the hard drive.
