When i remove files in my mac leopard they are removed but later on on the hard disc itself they keep staying. How do i remove the files?

Most of all it are music-files that I want to remove, I have my trash overfull with all the files I have removed, but on the hard-disc itself later on, when connecting it to the TV and music-installacion the removed files really aren't removed at all....

Thank you very much, i'm really greatfull that you'll have respondes my question. Untill now i didn't find the right solution. It took a while to try the solutions you've put me, because it's not my external harddrive. Now i have it in my hands again and when i connect it to my mac the files i had removed earlyer still don't show in de window that opens in my mac. It only shows when my friend uses it to play some music whit his installation at home. The removed files aren't really removed, they just got hidden or something like that. I emptyd my trashcan... I'm not really a computerexpert, so all that about FAT and everything, i don't understand it very well... But i'll keep trying. Thank you all again....

Are you right clicking on the trash can and emptying it. You pretty much have to delete files twice.

If you just delete them off the, this doesn't delete the files. It just removes the pointer to the file and leaves the space used by the file flagged as "in-use" so your operating system won't write to that spot. Once you remove the file pointer in the trash can the pointer is removed and the operating system marks that space as free to write to. This STILL doesn't erase the data until another file is written over that space. Sometimes even then that old file can be recovered. You would want to format the drive to remove all those "hidden" files. In MAC land you would go to Go > Utilities > Disk Utilities > Erase tab and erase and format the partition as either FAT32 or NTFS that way a Windows computer can still use the drive.

SOURCE: After blackout Mac-formatted ext. hard drive won't mount says its pc-formatted

Here is my best guess and strong suggestion. First do nothing else until you have your work off loaded to some other drive or media....and I mean do nothing....don't even turn it off until this is completed. Once that is done verify your work is there. Then learn to smoke or drink and sing hallelujah.

My best guess is you lost the FAT (file allocation table)...meaning it got (literally) zapped by the power failure (spike) which makes sense since it's continually being accessed. Lacie should have a disk diagnostics program on their website....that loaded onto a diskette or cd would be my first step. It will tell you if the drive is good or not. If good and after you have off loaded your files to a safe media then the fastest solution is probably to reformat and reload your applications then reload your files. I say fastest as (in my twilight years) I have almost (it's a pride thing) given up solving hard problems the hard way...particularly when they can be both hardware and software interrelated.

A couple of other points....uploading to the net your files (even if it costs) or using a bit torrent to transfer to a friends machine (pay for the other drive) or using raid (which I am not a big fan of) or copying them to a one touch....(possibly the least expensive solution (just start it at night...it's not fast the first time and do it daily). You have too much invested to get had by Mother Nature.

Why would I tell you this....well, there was the time I worked all night to finish some code and just as I finished (without saving once) and feeling satisfied I stretched back, extended legs and knocked the plug out of the socket. I also had a computer shop
wipe my disconnected spare duplicate drive at the same time they wiped my master. Today, and I have multiple large projects I work on (mine...not others), and despite more backups in more ways than you can imagine I am still subject to bouts of paranoia.

Lastly....Am not up to date with Mac but at some of the freeware sites I have run across utilities that might be of help. Trying to restore the fat (Windows keeps two copies) might be a possibility and I assume Mac has something similar. But I would only attempt this based on what the drive diagnostics results are....i.e. if you have more than 4 bad clusters it's probably not worth taking the chance of another major disruption. Hope this helps or at least points you in the right direction. Tango

SOURCE: problem removing write protect from seagate free agent drive

The problem is because Mac cannot write to NTFS formatted drives. You will have to reformat the drive in Mac. You will loose all the data :( Here is a link for the how to:

SOURCE: USB hard drive not recognized by Mac and by PC

Does the external drive work when connected to some _other_ computer? (Friend? Office? Home?)

It could be a failure either in the "hardware" inside the external-case (the USB adapter & interface)
or in the disk-drive "inside" the external-case.

So, a qualified technician can open the external drive, remove the disk-drive, and connect it directly to a computer, to see if the files can be "directly" read from the disk-drive.

If not, then you should search online for a "data recovery" service -- they are expensive, but they physically repair a damaged disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your data to another disk-drive.

Macbook black will not start beyond the initial 'bong'. Blue screen followed by endless spinning gear. PRAM, SMV reset, no go. Safe mode can't complete. With battery or on power adapter same result....

Hello yang2699tlk,
Try this instead of using your Leopard Disc.

  1. Immediately after the "bong" press and hold down "Command + S".
  2. Wait for blinking cursor and then type fsck -y (exactly like that).
  3. If you receive an "Appears to be OK" then type reboot and hit the return key.
  4. If you receive a "Disk has been modified" then repeat the fsck -y command until you get an "Appears to be OK" then type reboot and hit the return key.

This set of commands entered in "Single User Mode" will repair your disk. If this does not work remove the hard drive, plug it into another Mac and transfer your data to a different computer. Then install a new hard drive and reinstall Mac OS X.

Hope this helps, don't forget to vote. Thanks.
