Apparently the reason it is not accurate is that it is a Piece of crap and Sears will not stand behind it. I recommend you do not purchase any type tool that requires precision from Sears.

If the oven is grossly underheating or overheating, then you probably have a bad magnetron.

Hotpoint microwave oven, countertop, model RE964. How many watts is it?


The owner's manual (which you can download here) does not say, but most of their ovens from that era were 700 watts.

No, that is just fine. As a matter of fact, older ranges often had 50 to 60 degree swings in temp. Your oven temp (assuming your thermometer is dead on accurate) is 347 + 365 / 2 = 356 degrees when set at 350. I never mess with ovens which are within 10 degrees of set temp. (when checking the temps, make sure to take the readings after the oven has cycled on and off at least three times, and use a good digital oven calibration thermometer)

Some times I even get a little confused when the temperature gage in the cabs are not as accurate as we would expect. If you leave the radiator cap loose and put a thermometer in the coolant, or better yet ask around and find a infrared thermometer (you can leave the cap on). Check this reading at both ends of the radiator. Even if the water is at 210 degrees F, at the inlet from the top hose, as long as the coolant is at a lower temperature at the opposite end, this should be fine. If the radiator cap is leaking you may want to make sure the cap is ok.

If the gaskets are old, the pressure change with the breather off may indicate the PCV valve is not working properly. I believe the crankcase breather is still in the air breather. The combination of problems as well as excessive blow by will also cause leaks.
