Question about Gateway Tabor 3 (4000532) Motherboard

Windows XP sp2 won't install

I have made several attempts to install a new windows sp2 os on my gateway 500s but I keep getting problems with "system" not installing and through research determined I may need to update BIOS. However, after downloading update from Gateway and attempting to use floppy, I found my floppy was not pre-formatted and thus I have been unable to boot from floppy. I need some help. I am a definite novice and just don't have time for all this rigamarole.

I was running Windows XP Home, one of the first released. I've tried to install SP2 numerous times but it caused so many problems I would always end up doing a fresh install of my original OS. However, there are so many things now that won't run without SP2 so I ordered a new Windows XP SP2 to install. When I went to install, half way through the installation it came up with, "Fatal Error An Error has ben encountered that prevents setup from continuing Setup Failed to install product catalogs. This is a fatal error. The setup log files should contain more information. Press Ok to view setup file log.
Error: The signature for Windows XP Home Edition setup is invalid. the error code is 80096001. A system-level error occurred while verifying trust."
It then completed the install but would not start up. I ended up having to put the old Os back on just to get it running. I am on the internet with my laptop but not currently with that computer. Upon doing some research, I came across something that made me think maybe I need to update my BIOS before doing the install but I have not been able to successfully do that yet.

As I stated in my previous post, I did a fresh install from scratch, that was when I received the error. I originally received SP3 but when the install failed, I requested SP2. Same problems with the "system" error and the computer won't do anything afterwards so I have to install my old xp.

Page_fault_in_non_paged_area problem with Windows XP

where did you get your copy of windows? is it original or not?
if not no problem but you must asure you have taken from sure resources. this is caused some times from windows itself, and some time from that i tell now.
first from hard disk drive faults, and this is cause from electric problems that hapens to you and from fulfilling hour works or defekts from munufacturer.
so a new format and new installation of your system (do full format not quick) may resolve this problem.
second is caused from bad ram module due to oveclocking them ,or from electric problems caused in your pc devices. so changing rams (take from your friend even if was a litlle capacity to prove) and start your system that it is to prove either the problem is in your windows hdd of in the ram module/s.
this is causin your problem. check to fix this and your problem is resolved.

Error code

Apparently the XP Pro CD you are using is pre-SP2, thus causing the error. With XP RTM and SP1, you need to supply the proper SATA drivers for the chipset on the motherboard since there is no built-in support for SATA drives. You can download the drivers from http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Downloads/DownloadFile.aspx?catid=1&driverid=2214&areaid=2&LanID=0

During the XP setup you will need to press F6 to install these driver before attempting to copy the XP files to the drive. Or you could make a custom XP CD using the directions at http://maxeasyguide.blogspot.com/2008/04/preparations-for-winxp-installation-cd.html that has these SATA drivers already slipstreamed into the installation procedure.

Or if you know someone who has the WinXP Pro SP2 CD, you could borrow that for the install.

About windows setup

Hi niket_shah, sorry but you're board Asus M2N-MX, does support Win XP SP2.
Chances are that while installing windows updates one or more updates failed. People like myself know from repairing PC's which updates need to be installed first. If you're Win XP SP2 did not or would not install than either the Win CD is not a valid Microsoft Win XP SP2 CD or (You have a copy) & there is something wrong with the CD. After a fresh (New install) of Win XP with SP2 there is more than 90+ updates for SP2 which must be downloaded through windows update program. Or you're windows will not function properly.
Just to show you what versions of windows the M2N-MX board does support. Click the link listed below. Once the link loads click the + sign next to Audio. Scroll down the page an notice the different Window version listed for you're board.
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?modelname=M2N-MX&SLanguage=en-us
To recap this issue. The problem is either the WinCD or possibly you're hard drive. Make sure you allow windows to perform a full format before installing window. (Not a quick format).

About Linux fedora and XP

Without knowing more about your system, the key rule is to install XP first, then Fedora.
If that doesn't work then it's time to put more partitions on your hard drive, and install the 2 operating systems on different partitions, again, remembering that Windows XP has to be the first installed.

Motherboard upgrade??

Dear kaname,

Your computer can support Windows XP, which has better hardware support and compatibility with the 2003 Office suit. XP also updates your hardware automatically once you are on the internet. You might want to try this.

Keep in mind that the older the Operating System, the harder it is for Office suites to compat. Newer Operating systems have better support for your computing. If you don't have HDD problems, the BIOS should not prevent you from loading SP2 for Win2000.

Conclusion:

1. The SP2 Source Disk may have a problem
2. The Win 2000 you have already loaded may be missing components, preventing the SP2 to load.
2. Notton Antivirus versions and the 2003 office both reject Win 2000. They just don't like it; it's getting too old.

Get with it, Kaname!!!!
