I have made several attempts to install a new windows sp2 os on my gateway 500s but I keep getting problems with "system" not installing and through research determined I may need to update BIOS. However, after downloading update from Gateway and attempting to use floppy, I found my floppy was not pre-formatted and thus I have been unable to boot from floppy. I need some help. I am a definite novice and just don't have time for all this rigamarole.

where did you get your copy of windows? is it original or not?
if not no problem but you must asure you have taken from sure resources. this is caused some times from windows itself, and some time from that i tell now.
first from hard disk drive faults, and this is cause from electric problems that hapens to you and from fulfilling hour works or defekts from munufacturer.
so a new format and new installation of your system (do full format not quick) may resolve this problem.
second is caused from bad ram module due to oveclocking them ,or from electric problems caused in your pc devices. so changing rams (take from your friend even if was a litlle capacity to prove) and start your system that it is to prove either the problem is in your windows hdd of in the ram module/s.
this is causin your problem. check to fix this and your problem is resolved.
Hi niket_shah, sorry but you're board Asus M2N-MX, does support Win XP SP2.
Chances are that while installing windows updates one or more updates failed. People like myself know from repairing PC's which updates need to be installed first. If you're Win XP SP2 did not or would not install than either the Win CD is not a valid Microsoft Win XP SP2 CD or (You have a copy) & there is something wrong with the CD. After a fresh (New install) of Win XP with SP2 there is more than 90+ updates for SP2 which must be downloaded through windows update program. Or you're windows will not function properly.
Just to show you what versions of windows the M2N-MX board does support. Click the link listed below. Once the link loads click the + sign next to Audio. Scroll down the page an notice the different Window version listed for you're board. http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?modelname=M2N-MX&SLanguage=en-us
To recap this issue. The problem is either the WinCD or possibly you're hard drive. Make sure you allow windows to perform a full format before installing window. (Not a quick format).
Without knowing more about your system, the key rule is to install XP first, then Fedora. If that doesn't work then it's time to put more partitions on your hard drive, and install the 2 operating systems on different partitions, again, remembering that Windows XP has to be the first installed.
Your computer can support Windows XP, which has better hardware support and compatibility with the 2003 Office suit. XP also updates your hardware automatically once you are on the internet. You might want to try this.
Keep in mind that the older the Operating System, the harder it is for Office suites to compat. Newer Operating systems have better support for your computing. If you don't have HDD problems, the BIOS should not prevent you from loading SP2 for Win2000.
1. The SP2 Source Disk may have a problem
2. The Win 2000 you have already loaded may be missing components, preventing the SP2 to load.
2. Notton Antivirus versions and the 2003 office both reject Win 2000. They just don't like it; it's getting too old.
