The Wi-Fi light that illuminates on the panel of lights below the sceen is out, so obviously the wireless has become switched off. There is no obvious means of switching this back on, is it a combination of certain keys? It would be appreciated if you can help.

Re: Dell Inspiron 6400 cant get wireless connection
The Wi-FI light turns on when wireless networking is enabled. To enable or disable wireless networking, press and hold the blue <Fn> key and press the <F2> key. The <Fn> key is located on the lower left hand side of the keyboard.

First of all you need to check if the driver is installed. To check, click on Start > right click My Computer, click Manage, on the left side click Device Manager > check the right pane, you will see all the devices installed on your machine on that pane. Check if your wireless device is installed properly.
If it has no marks on it on the device manager, you might just need to enable the device itself. Most Dell computers uses Fn+F2 keys to activate the wireless. if it has a yellow mark, just install the driver and you're done.
Hope this works.. Regards...
The WI-Fi LED is a sign that its Enabled or ON. The LED light on the side of the switch is called the Wi-Fi Catcher. The light operates as follows: Flashing blue: Searching for networks Solid blue: Strong network found Solid yellow: Weak network found Off: No signal found

if you cant connect to any network because your wireless is not turned on, try this press and hold the " fn " key in your keyboard and tap f3.
you will able to see the wireless light is turned on. you can also check the device manager and look under the network adapter if the driver is properly installed or if it has a symbol of " ! " or " x ". if that is so then try to install the driver for wireless adapter using the "driver and utilities" cd.
(note: the fn key is usually next to the windows key)
by default, dell systems' switch for wireless can be done by pressing Fn and tap F2. The wifi light should lit up. Your modem is integrated to the motherboard. If you were able to lit up the wifi light, this should be able to detect wireless signals for you to connect to.
