The red x means you have no internet connection.
Power on the laptop computer and wait for the operating system to boot. Right-click the wireless Internet icon in the lower right corner of the desktop. This brings up a new pull-down menu. Select "View Available Wireless Networks." This brings up a selection of different possible Internet connections that are in range of the computer. Select the wireless Internet connection you want to use. If a password is required, you need to type it in now. Wait for the laptop to connect to the Internet. In a moment the computer is going to state it has successfully connected to the Internet. click Start, Run type in cmd and click Ok to bring up a command prompt. Type ipconfig /all and press enter and see if it gives you an IP address similar to 192.168.1.100. Check your wireless connection properties under My Network Places. Right click the wireless connection icon and choose properties. From there make sure Internet Protocol {TCP/IP} is listed, highlight it and click properties. Make sure Obtain an IP address automatically is checked and Obtain DNS server address automatically is checked. Make sure you Ethernet is enabled in bios restart your computer during the boot up process you will see on your screen a certain key to press to enter set up (BIOS) press and hold that key to enter bios using arrow keys scroll to intergrated peripherals look for SiS On Chip Pci Device press enter scroll to SiS 10/100m press enter make sure its enabled if still no joy Let's first try to start the wireless service i.e. WLAN AutoConfig service manually. To do this, login to the computer as an administrator.

1. Click Start, type services.msc and hit enter.

2. Locate WLAN AutoConfig service, double click on it to open its properties window.

3. Under General tab, change the Startup type to Automatic and click Start button.

4. Click Apply and then ok. For more information about the wireless settings, check this link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb878035.aspx Hope this helps.

How do i check to see if wireless is on

Hi there is 2 ways you can check if wireless is active. 1st at the bottom right of your monitor, next to the battery icon, there will either be a laptop with a red X, if so its not active, if it is active there will be a icon with bars going small to large. 2nd way is to click on start, then control panel, then network and internet, then connect to a network. then select your network and enter and wpa key if needed.

Swithc on wireless acer 6530 please

Above the keyboard on the right there is a collection of blue lights that are always on. Next to that is a white 'satellite dish' icon, hold your finger over this icon for a few seconds once you take your finger off it should be flashing red whilst it searches for wireless networks.

One laptop cann access the internet via the dlink wireless router, the other laptop can not even see the network.

On the "other" laptop, is the wireless adapter "enabled" or "disabled" ?
Look for either a button, or a slider, or a sequence of keys ("hold down FN and press F5") to enable the wireless adapter.

Then, click Start
Click Control Panel
Click System
Click Hardware
Click Device Manager
Click the '+' to the left of the 'Network Devices'
Do you see the wireless adapter listed?
Is there any RED or YELLOW tags on top of the device's icon?
If so, double-click the icon, and click "Reinstall Driver".

So i have my desktop set up online, but i want to get my laptop hooked up as well and i have a router. how do i hook that up to?

On the right bottom corner of your screen, you should see a message/icon about wireless networks.

Select the icon and you should see a list of wireless networks. Select your network, add your password (if you set up a password) and you should be connected.

Open your browser.

Hope this helps.

Wireless switch not working

Sometimes when you bootup and the error message = "wireless connection has limited or no connection", or has a red X on the wireless icon, it is because the router has not issued an IP address to the wireless card. Right click on the wireless connection and then click Repair.
If this doesn't work then reboot the router then the laptop, this should fix the problem

I have a balance 557s laptop that the wireless wont work it shows the icon with a red x wont turn on when you push the wireless button

Sometimes when you get a red x against the wireless icon, it means the wireless card did not get an IP address from the wireless router or the router needs resetting.
To get the router to issue a new IP address to the laptop, right click on the wireless icon and click on Repair.
If this doesn't work, power off thr router for 30 secs and power up the router, wait till the LEDs on the router are on then boot up the laptop or do a Repair on the wireless icon.

Wifi card not working???

Your wireless card is not picking up your wireless router, the fault could be that your wireless card did not get a IP address from the router and therefore won't allow the laptop to get into the Internet. Two things to try, if the wireless icon is on the task bar with a red X on the icon then right click on the icon and click on Repair (this will force the wireless router to issue the wireless card with a new IP address). If you don't have an Icon then go to Control Panel - Network Connections and right click on the wireless connection and then click Repair. If this dosen't work then power off your wireless router wait for 30 secs. then power up the wireless router and the reboot your laptop. Get back to me if you still have problems with all error messages.

I don't no if wireless is on the light ust keeps flashing

there are many ways to check to see if the wireless adaptors are on in your laptop.

one sign us usually a button or a light with a icon that looks like an antenna with lines coming off it.

second is by looking at the bottom of the task bar by the clock and seeing a single computer screen type icon with red lines coming off it. if that same icon has a red X on it, your wireless might be off or disconnected.
