SOURCE: wong letters & numbers
I downloaded the manual from http://www.devicemanuals.com/downloadguide.php and then, following the instructions there, I removed then re-inserted the daisy wheel. This solved my problem. Perhaps it had somehow gotten out of adjustment. At least, it is something to try if you haven't tried it already.

Many SCM typewriters have an impression control knob on them. Look for a knob on either the right or left side of the the keyboard with numbers from 1 to 10. The higher the number reading the darker it is supposed to print. Be careful not to go so high that the typeface cut holes in the paper. If this doesn't help, try putting a drop or two of sewing machine oil (or Triflow Oil) on your finger and rubbing it across the typebar segment (the slotted and curved metal piece that the typebars pivot in). Since the typewriter sat a while the segment may be sticky. Hope this helps.
