Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

Open Question

I have a Kenmore Elite refrigerator (model106.54782801) that is running cold. It is set at 0 (freezer) and 37, but thermometers showed 15 below in the freezer and 34 in the refrigerator before I changed the settings. I tried to make the freezer less cold by changing the temperature setting to 5, and that made no difference. If anything, it got colder in both the refrigerator and freezer, which now are 26 and 17 below, respectively. What do you suppose is the problem? Should I call a Sears repair person to take care of this?

Your most likely cause is the $170 control board. It is the only thing that I know of that can change the temperature automatically. Please rate this post.

The cold control needs replacing. Thats the knob with the numbers that turn the Ref OFF and ON.
What I do is call my local Appliance Parts Store with my model no. They are extremely helpful .
Get freezer and ref thermometer. Ref is probably too cold.
Freezer should be 0 to 10 degrees. Ref 33 to 35

Check the freezer temperature with a separate fridge thermometer.

It could be a fault with the sensor in the freezer - which can be replaced.

How to set a temperture

Hello,

By keep your refrigerator or freezer too cold, it unnecessarily wastes electricity. The recommended temperature is 37 to 40 degrees for the fresh food compartment of the refrigerator. The recommended temperature for the freezer compartment is 5 degrees. If you have a separate freezer for long-term food storage, it should kept at 0 to -5 degrees.

The following steps below is how to set the temperature of your refrigerator.

The first thing you must know is that your refrigerator should be set at 37-38 degrees. Anything at 40 or higher and you are risking food born illness (food poisoning) or spoiling your food.

Step 2
Place your magnetic thermometer in the refrigerator.

Step 3
Set your dial on your refrigerator to the second lowest setting. (If your refrigerator is already equipped with a digital thermostat, simply set it for 37 or 38 degrees and do not move on to the next step)

Step 4
After 2 hours, check your thermometer reading. If your reading is 38 degrees, there is no need to go higher and you are ready to put your groceries in. Be sure not to open and close your refrigerator during these two hours or your temperature reading will be incorrect.

If your reading is higher than 38 degrees, move your dial up to the next coldest setting and repeat the steps every two hours until you reach the correct temperature for your refrigerator.

Step 5
Once you have reached the correct refrigeration temperature for your refrigerator, place the magnetic thermometer in the refrigerator permanently and watch for changes.

Typically, your refrigerator temperature will need to be adjusted with the seasons, a higher setting in the summer and a lower setting in the winter.

Hope this helpout and take care.

Have defrosted my 210 cu.ft. upright freezer v2003rw3, do not have my manual to hand . At what setting on the dial should I put it at to start it up?

Every Refrigerator has its own "personality" There is no common
setting for any one refrigerator. I would start with 3
The real solution is what I have always told my customers
Get a refrigerator thermometer and a freezer thermometer
Refrigerator temp should be about 33-37 degrees.
Freezer should be about 0-10 degrees. below 0 is overkill

If this was helpful please rate me.

Refrigerator freezing lettuce. Adjustments result in freezer section too warm. I can't seem to find the correct settings. I can't locate my manual. This appliance is 25 years old or more.

a refrigerator thermometer is a good investment (usually available at grocery stores) .. i have two to make it faster to adjust things (one in freezer and one in refrigerator) ... first set the freezer with the temperature control .. set the freezer to 0 degrees F (adjust a little at a time until its close (wait several hours or a day between settings) ... then you may have another control called "air" or "refrigerator" .. you set that one for 37 deg in the refrigerator .. it usually takes a few days to get it right .. but without at least one thermometer you are flying blind, its nearly impossible to do correctly .. you can use any thermometer that is accurate down to 0 degrees, so you dont have to buy one if you already have one .. once you get it right you might want to mark the adjustments incase someone changes them ..
