Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT - DVI not working

I have a Jaton Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT 256MB PCI-e video card. Standard VGA output works fine. DVI works only when booting up (BIOS screen, Windows startup screen) but thereafter is blank - so I suspected a driver issue, especially when I later upgraded the motherboard and the problem remained. Tried a couple of different drivers (using Win XP) but couldn't resolve it and decided to replace the card. Recently decided to upgrade another system to Win 8 and thought I'd give the card another go, hoping that any driver issue might be resolved, but had exactly the same problem. Any clues? Some strange BIOS or driver setting perhaps? It's strange that DVI output works on startup.

PCI is not the same as PCI Express - the sockets are different so users can't mix them up.
The nVidia card should work if it's a PCIE.

Black Screen after installing new NVidia 9400GT

Put the old card back in, remove the old drivers and restart it in VGA mode.
You don't say what operating system you use, but XP & Vista you should be able to hit F8 before the windows splash screen to select VGA mode or Safe Mode.
Once you do that you should be able to put the new card in and start it in standard VGA mode then load the new drivers.

Problem installation video card

Hello Virna, i have that exact graphics card and dell GX270 desktop here at home, tho it has been awhile since i removed the Nvidia PCI card for a more favorable AGP card. From what i remember, first check your BIOS (hit F2 on startup) and select integrated devices, scroll down and make sure your default video output is either PCI (if available) or AUTO) exit saving changes. If that yields no result. Plug in a second monitor to your old integrated video output, if you can view windows after bootup from there, then you can install the proper Nvidia display driver for windows Xp (available here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_175.19_whql.html ). After installing, right click on the desktop, select properties, display settings tab, and make sure the Geforce card is the main monitor and the desktop monitor. Click apply, unplug the integrated VGA output, and restart. Hope this helps.
