Re: remove he dvd drive from Packard Bell computer
Remove both left and right panals on the tower. Disconnect the IDE ribbon cable and power from back of the cd drive. There also may be a small wire that connects ether to the sound card or motherboard also. Remove all screws from the right and left side of the device. Push the drive out the front.

Being a desktop computer, virtually all dvd burners will work, I like to use "anything drives", you know, the ones that read and write CD's DVD's MultiLayer disks etc.I would recommend this or something similar: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0AJ34F7170
the thing you must be sure of before buying one is the interface type. Is it SATA or EIDE.. If in doubt, remove the old one and bring it with you to a local supplier like Best Buy or Staples
Remove the hard disk and attach it to an USB hard drive adapter and then connect it into the USB port of a working computer. This computer will detect the hard drive as an external storage device, then you can open the various folders and files to copy your files to this computer or burn your data to a CD/DVD disc or USB flash drive. Return you hard disk back to your Packard Bell so you can reinstall Windows.
If your trying to open the CD tray to put a CD in and you can't find or the button to open it doesnt work. You can go into the "My Computer" and right click on the CD-Rom drive and select "eject" to open it.
If you are not facing any other issues other than playing the CDs, I would suggest you to go for an External Drive and get this issue resolved. In case you are facing many other issues and the computer you are using is not a Pentium 4 or equivalent, I would advice you to go for a new computer with better configuration.
The green is usually the audio out and the blue is audio in.
To test the jacks to determine which is which, insert an audio CD in the CD/DVD drive to get audio sound and plug headphones into the each of the jacks, the one without sound will be the audio in.
