Re: remove he dvd drive from Packard Bell computer
Remove both left and right panals on the tower. Disconnect the IDE ribbon cable and power from back of the cd drive. There also may be a small wire that connects ether to the sound card or motherboard also. Remove all screws from the right and left side of the device. Push the drive out the front.

There is usually one or two screws that holds the DVD driver, flip laptop over, now look at the area where the DVD is, you should see one or two screws with or without a lock symbol, remove screws and gently remove player, don't forget to open the tray easier to remove. Check ebay to see if they have what you are looking for.
This sounds like a common problem. You need to install the drivers (small programs that instruct the computer to notice and manipulate peripherals, like a dvd or cd player, sound card, etc...).
The easiest place to find your specific driver is at the Packard Bell web site under support > Downloads. There are MANY sites (even some that advertise on this very site) that say they have the drivers for your dvd drive, but go directly to your manufacturer's web site. These companies that provide drivers for computers install a program into your computer and there is a fee for use of these web sites.
UPDATE: I just checked the Packard Bell Web Site and was unable to find specific drivers for your particular model. They stopped making them some time ago, and no longer support the model. That being said, you can still conceivably find the drivers, it will just take some investigative work on your part. In doing a broad search on the internet, I found that many people are looking for that very driver, which is an indication it has become hard to find.
Check the back of the PC case, There maybe a screw that needs to be removed in order to open the side panel. Another thing could be that there is some kind of sliding lock, that is holding the panel in place. Keep playing around in the back of the case, most likely you'll find it within a few minutes.

If you cannot see the speaker icon in the taskbar, click on Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices and tick place icon in the taskbar. That's if a driver has been installed for your sound device which is a creative sounblaster I think.
