IBM ThinkPad R31 won't start from new, fully charged battery

My ThinkPad laptop has Windows XP loaded and I just bought a new battery for it. With the old battery, and now the new one, the TP will not start unless the power adapter is plugged in.
Once the unit is running, it works fine with battery power.
More detail: Unit tries to start with two green lights - power and battery on. Hard drive light blinks on then goes out. Before the screen lights up, the machine shuts off.

No I did not charge the battery for 12 hours prior to using it. It is as if there is something occurring to preclude starting when the battery is not fully charged.

I have allowed the battery to fully discharge and have recharged for a full 24 hours.

Chances are the new battery is either dead, or needs to be charged, depending on how long it sat on the shelf before you bought it.

Hi there
While you are using the laptop on AC power go to the manufacturers website for a bios update for that model laptop, update the bios and turn the machine off, then try the battery, don't turn the machine on and plug in AC power, look then to see if the charge indicator light is on and is charging.
If it is see if the laptop boots

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya

It sounds like you might have gotten something on the power adapter, that or inside the power port on the laptop. I would check and clean both of these. I would also try and clean the battery connection on the laptop.

I hope this helps,

Eric

Ibm thinkpad r31 windows vista video drivers

The OS will ,USUALLY, apply a generic driver to the Graphics Adapter, and most essential components. Not always, but usually, when it boots the first thing you do is Windows Updates. You may have problems with some hardware when doing a OS upgrade. It can be tricky. If, say, you jump from XP to 7, you may be able to use vista drivers. Your in luck, on the ThinkPad R31 support website Vista and Win 7 drivers are available, SEE: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT072387 Go with Win 7, if you have that option.

Two problems with my IBM thinkpad r31 (DVD player and Battery):

Your power plug inside the laptop on the motherboard is likely corroded around the positive terminal connected to the motherboard. Repair places will charge a few hundred dollars to fix this fairly simple problem not requiring any parts. Good luck. If you live in new zealand I can do it for you fairly cheap...

Batterie

There is nothing to change , should start charging automaticlly.....I would recommend installing the new battery , plugging in the laptop and keeping it off....see if that gets it charged up. It could be that it is just fully drained.

Also , did you have problems with charging with your last battery? It could be possible that your charger is shot , thats why none of the batterie's charged.

DVD

Hi,
I don't mean to disagree with my associate, but DVD players for R series (or T, A, etc) can be found for less than 20.00 US (Ebay is a good example)
For that matter, we've got at least a dozen at our shop which we sell for 25.00
Installation is very simple as well, just pop the old drive out, put the new drive in.
Good luck
