In your nvidia control panel on the top set it to advanced settings.
then in the menu on the left there should be a option called : Manage custom resolutions

in there you just click create and enter the values you want.
if the option is not in the menu try updating your video card drivers.

The native resolution for the x193w monitor is 1440x900. The monitor will only allow certain resolutions. You may need to create a custom resolution using the nvidia control panel.
Goto:
advanced options display change resolution customize create custom resolution horizontal pixels : 1440 vertical lines 900 refresh I belive is either 75 or 60. Whichever looks better scan type: progressive

I changed the screen resolution from 1024 768. while booting the monitor goes to power saver mode and displays "Out of Range 53.7KHZ to 60Hz. My OS is Win XP sp 3,

If the monitor is able to display the video after the computer boots, it may be something that you will have to live with.

But, you may be able to specify a different refresh rate based on the ability of your video card. Right click on the desktop, choose properties, then settings, and advanced button. On the new window, click on Adapter, then click on the Display All Modes button. The default for 1024x768 resolution is 60Hz, but your video card may offer another frequency which may be compatible with the monitor.

If you are unable to see anything after the computer boots, restart in safemode, then make the changes.

Is this an older monitor? 1024x768 is an industry default mode / setting. I am surprised that the monitor doesn't like it.

I am using an HW173D monitor with Windowsd XP, and everything displays too wide. How can I resolve this problem?

You need to go to your Display Properties (in Control Panel or right-click desktop and choose Properties), go to Settings tab and set the desktop resolution to 1440x900 which is your monitor's native resolution.
If this resolution is not available, make sure your monitor type (found in Advanced options) is set to "Plug and Play monitor".

I just cant change the resolution of my desktop

If you dont have many options at all on what you can do like change the resolution or change the color settings it could be possible that you dont have the correct driver for your video card.

Go to Driver.com
Use the free program that scans your computer and sees what drivers you need to update.

good luck.

Monitor problem

It sounds as if you have a resolution set that the display does not support. Restart your machine in safe/VGA mode by holding down F8 while the machine boots. Once in safe mode, set the resolution (Right click--> properties--> Settings--> Screen Resolution) to one that your display supports.
