Re: belt??

1. If you are not used to a Kirby, you may not realise that the agitator brush is supposed to be adjusted to the correct height every time you use the cleaner (the optimum height is different on every different carpet). To do this, you use the two foot operated levers on the left hand side of the unit whilst holding the handle. One lever lifts the brushes to the maximum height above the floor (the larger one I think). Start with the machine in this location and then operate the other lever a single click at a time until you hear the brushes "growl" on the carpet. The aim is to keep this growling as constant as possible whilst you vacuum. If you drop it too far, the growling stops, which means that the brushes have stopped rotating and you have gone too far - lift them again and drop to correct height (probably one less click than last time). If you've done all this, and still have a problem, proceed to: 2. Check that the drive belt is in good condition. To do this, lift the hood (the headlight bit), rotate the belt hook so that the red arrows line up. You can then remove the front nozzle by flicking the small lever over. Look inside the round-ish hole and check tha the belt is there on the hook. It should be tight and not show any signs of thinning. You can release the belt hook to allow you to roatate and isnpect the whole belt. Make sure it is back on the hook before repalceing the nozzle on the main body. If you need to change the belt, remove the nozzle head, turn it over so that you are looking at the bit which is normally facing the floor. There is a cover which is removed by operating two levers. Once you have done this, release the old belt from the hook (if it is there at all!). It is worth checking that the roller does rotate at this stage - if it does not, then its bearings are seized and you'll need to free them or buy a new roller. You can now pull out the wooden roller with the brushes on it, but first note the orientation of it and also the number of notches inscribed in the plastic end caps - you'll need to put it back in the same way when you have replaced the belt. Belt replacement is just a case of pulling the old one off and dropping the new one on in roughly the same position. Before putting it back together, remove and hairs/fibres that are wound around the brush. Reassembly is the reverse of dismantling. Once the metal cover is back over the brushes, check how much brush is protruding past the metal cover. About 4-5mm is the optimum I think, but someone else may know better.... You can increase or reduce by taking the metal cover and brushes off again and putting the brush roller back in with a different number of notches showing at the ends. Hopefully when you get it all back together again you'll now have a working machine. Hope this doesn't sound to complex - it is actually a very simple operation when you try it and every step has been designed to make it easy for an end user.

I have torn my file cabinet apart, and cannot locate my manual for my Kirby 2001 Limited Edition. I am trying to replace the belt, and need the manual in order to do so.

Kirby models are all very similar. The only manual I've been able to locate is for the G6. You can download or print it from the below link.

Or check the belt change video at the following site. I recommend making this site a favorite for easy access to these videos.

Vibrating – that usually happens on some short fiber or very dense carpets. When nozzle goes against the carpet fiber Kirby starts jumping. Try vacuuming the same place while facing opposite way.

Belt – red arrows means DISENGAGE. When you install the nozzle on the Kirby unit while green arrows match you will not be able to turn it on red. You must follow sequence (starting from nozzle off the Kirby, green arrows match, Kirby front lifter all the way up by pressing one of the pedals):
1. Turn Kirby knob to match red arrows. You will feel some tension and hook inside of the nozzle is supposed to catch the belt and stretch forming a loop for the Kirby shaft.
2. Put the nozzle on the Kirby and lock it on with the latch.
3. Twist the knob back to match the green arrows. YOU ARE DONE

Go to Kirby vacuum online manual. There are some small details that you may want to pay attention to if you have removed the brush roll to install a new belt. Also there are some pictures that will help you understanding the process.

I need to know how to use the attachments that came with the Kirby. I know how to use the shampoo/vacuum, but not the other attachments or the upholstery cleaner. Does anyone have any idea?

I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
1st, you need to un-hook the lever @ the top of the Kirby head, dial off the belt from the Kirby Vacuum Head using the Kirby emblem in the front of the vacuum, that also serves as a hook/spoon to dial the belt off the fan pulley. Once you have removed the vacuum head you now hook up the attachment hose to use the attachments by locking the attachment hose to the top lever. All regular Kirby attachment will fix on the attachment hose end including the spin brush if you have one with your Kirby --- using the Kirby Shampoo spray the soiled area and use the spin brush to agitate the carpet and or upholstery, try not to use to much water. If you have a Kirby shampooer – use the recovery tank on the exhaust port of the Kirby (this means that the cloth/paper bag needs to come off and install the clear recovery tank. Please refer to the Kirby owners manual for any type of trouble shooting that you might need – or please feel free to contact your local vacuum dealer in the yellow pages or contact your Kirby factory manufacturer listed below: Contact Us by Phone
