Question about Toshiba A000006600 P100 P105 MOTHERBOARD

Applied power using wrong AC adapter. What damages occurred during power up using wrong AC adapter?

Toshiba Satellite P105-S6177 model PSPAAU-01100S Motherboard P/N DABD1VMB06C. What damages occurred applying power using wrong AC adapter? Something popped once. Very little smell, no smoke. While I fix M/B I want to change audio ear phone connector. All in one motherboard available now?

What did you 'smoke'?

The power circuit section of the motherboard. (Hopefully only that)

While I fix M/B? Does this mean you are contemplating, board level component replacement?

Then you have skills in replacing SMD/SMT components.
(Surface Mount Device/Surface Mount Technology)

[Except for the capacitors which are Leaded. They have leads ]

However, NO.
The audio headphone jack resides on an Audio Board, and this is a separate circuit board. (PCB. Printed Circuit Board)
Therefore even if the motherboard is repaired, or replaced; you still have to replace the Audio Board.


No, it's cheap!

The components you are looking at replacing, average around 18 cents USD to $1.01. Maybe a little higher for some SMD/SMT components, but Not much.

Without going into detailed power circuit technology, for laptops; let me just say that you will be looking for bad;
A) Power MOSFET's
C) Diodes that are SMD/SMT
D) Solid Polymer Capacitors

[MLCC = Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor. They are SMD/SMT also ]

Let's take a look at the motherboard,

Scroll to the bottom for the large photos.
The first photo shows a BOTTOM view of the motherboard.
(Heading A000012540 in blue )
This is where the Processor, Ram Memory, and graphics chipset are located.

[The Intel Core Duo T2250 processor, uses a Socket M processor socket, ]

The second photo down shows a TOP view.

Looking back at the Bottom view; observe the two shiny round objects at the bottom of the motherboard photo, and they have a RED mark on one side.

These are Solid Polymer Capacitors. If you look around the motherboard, you will see larger examples; but they have a BLACK mark on one side.

Rarely do these go out, but IF they do they go with a BANG!
(Like a loud POP!)
They explode like a miniature grenade, and send shrapnel all over.
Too much Voltage can do that, too.

Could be one bit the dust.
Along possibly with Power MOSFET's, and/or MLCC's.

( Except the Power MOSFET's should be rated at 30 Volts. [DC]
[ Will handle UP TO 30 Volts ]
Did you plug an AC adapter [Charger] in, that produced more than 30 Volts? )

The DC Power Jack is a DC Power Harness.
It is the DC Power Jack; attached to a small cable, and the cable ends in a plug connector. The plug connector of the cable, plugs into the motherboard.
The DC Power Jack itself, resides in a Channel formed in the outside wall of the Base Enclosure. (Also can be called the Bottom Cover),

Where it plugs into the motherboard, is the Power Circuit section of the motherboard.
This area, and the matching area on the Bottom of the motherboard, are specifically where you need to check for bad components.

Not THE Power MOSFET's that are used, but a large example so you can see what to look for,

The 'legs' on the sides are J-leads.

Example of MLCC's that are SMD/SMT.
Not THE ones, just examples. I chose a 4.7uF at 16 Volts (DC), for an example, (SMD/SMT),

Not in your level of expertise, or something you wish to attempt?
I understand. Replacing the motherboard as a unit, may be more feasible for you.

Something I would like to bring up;

When Windows is installed on a computer, it assigns hash values to certain major hardware components. Think of them as Serial Numbers, but with no personal information attached.

Hardware components such as;
A) Processor (CPU)

B) Motherboard. This also includes the motherboard chipset, and BIOS program. (BIOS program; To also include the version, and date of the BIOS program)

C) Harddrive
D) Graphics chipset

Change any two of these components, and Windows may throw up a 'Red Flag'.
Thinks this Genuine copy of Windows is being removed from one computer, and installed on another computer.

This = NO
Microsoft User's License states, "One GENUINE copy of Windows per ONE computer"
(Microsoft makes one Master disk. From it all GENUINE copies are made, and sold to the consumer)

You may get an Activation window that comes up. Wants you to activate the genuine copy of Windows you have on your computer.
If so reply back in a Comment, and I'll guide you in performing this simple procedure.
(Advise DO NOT use the internet method. You want to Call Microsoft. MUCH nicer to speak to a REAL person, and also if there is a problem, a HUMAN BEING can help you figure it out)

The capacitors are the weakest link. Solid caps pop LOUD )

If the laptop still works, then there would be no need to replace the motherboard. The DC jack is replaceable/repairable. What would be more challenging is the disassembly and eventual exposing of the bottom part of the circuitry where the DC jack is soldered into. Often the DC jack would have at least 2 solder point (not more than 3). This might interest you.

Try disconnecting the power outlet and removing the battery for about 10 seconds.

I need to know what processor ...I can upgrade a P105-S6177 Toshiba with....I need something in the 2.4 range and an upgrade video card to 256mb

You won't be able to upgrade past 2.13ghz but you can upgrade the video card no problem. Cheapest place to get one is ebay. Just ebay for "p105 video card" and a bunch will pop up.

Oh I would search the net and even call Toshiba to verify the fastest cpu you can get. Make sure you get the model number of the CPU that will help you track it down easily. And BEFORE you install new cpu make sure you are running the latest bios firmware version before upgrade ;)

My laptop will not turn on the ac indicator is on and the battery indicator show full charge but laptop won't power up

Can be many reasons if there is no power up and unless the mother board is checked for the source of the power supply , the functiioning of the battery backup , memory or the processor.
If not familiar get it check with a Tosibha service centre to get an idea , and estimate for you to decide further course of action.

may be u used it untill it discharged completely so have pateince connect the power chord nd give it some time to recharge atleast half an hour. nd now try to power on it hopefully it will work

Installed Windows 7 and now I have no volume even tho it shows it to be working

Toshiba has specfic instructions for your model depending on serial #. These instrustions must be followed for win 7 to work properly

go to ru and type msconfig.Then u'll see a window , der goto boot.ini and delete one os.and restart the system

Hi Ed;

This is issue has resolution as it has been published on Toshiba's Official Support Website. It seems you need to go to an Authorized Toshiba Center. They have a special tool to re-flash your BIOS and it will resolve the issue. I am adding the original text and link for the solution below
